Giving Back and Making a Difference (Jun 01 2004 19:42 GMT)

- My friend Abby will walk 60 miles to raise money to fight breast cancer. Help her out by giving money on the Donation Page of Abigail Gullo. Abby wrote this letter to me: Hello Eric, I lost my dear Aunt Marie this year after her 16 year long battle with breast cancer. In her honor, I'll be participating in a very special event called the Breast Cancer 3-Day.

Listing Your Email Address and Avoiding Spam (Jun 01 2004 19:42 GMT)

- I should have listed my email address months ago on this site, but I did not want to deal with more spam. A List Apart Magazine shows a way to list spam avoiding email address in Win the SPAM Arms Race. If you want to skip the article, head to Automatic Enkoder for the web-based and OS X applications. Note that these solutions require Javascript to work. You can test the effectiveness of the email obfuscation with the Encoded email address harvester.

From AtomEnabled.org: Atom is a simple way to read and write information on the web, allowing you to easily keep track of more sites in less time, and to seamlessly share your words and ideas by publishing to the web.

RSS Explained For Technical Users (Jun 01 2004 19:42 GMT)

RSS Explained For End Users (Jun 01 2004 19:42 GMT)

- From What Is RSS? RSS Explained: RSS (Rich Site Summary) is a format for delivering summaries of regularly changing web content. Many news-related sites, weblogs and other online publishers syndicate their content as an RSS Feed to whoever wants it. The most obvious uses for RSS feeds are news sites and blogs, but you can create your own custom feed of top selling amazon.

Mp3 Blogs for the Music Obsessed (Jun 01 2004 19:42 GMT)

- The Copy, Right? website linked to many other mp3 weblogs so I had to check some of them out. Into The Groove delights in the latest Euro-pop. If you like Gavin DeGraw, or Swedish pop, or you think that boy bands would sound better if they were cheesy German boy bands, this site is for you. said the gramophone ranges from alt-country, indie rock, to singer songwriter.

Cover Songs as Trainwrecks and Revelations (Jun 01 2004 19:42 GMT)

- I stumbled on to Copy, Right? and the site quickly sucked me in. The website reviews cover songs, and provides mp3 files to download. Liza, the author, only provides each mp3 file for at most a week. The group Class performs the most ridiculous cover of "We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off".

The Right Scrap of Paper (Jun 01 2004 19:42 GMT)

- While I still have a Handspring Visor, but I've given up using it as an input device. I found that even if I practiced using Graffiti script, or used the Fitaly Keyboard application, I still wrote much faster on paper. I never carried my Visor out when I ran errands because it took up too much space. Someday I will buy an iPod and use it as a read-only PDA, but I'll still need paper. A couple of years ago I started to carry letter-sized paper that I folded four times to fit in my pocket.

Advice on Price (Jun 01 2004 19:42 GMT)

- With all the talk about prices for Movable Type, I found an interesting article called "Setting the price: Part II". In the comments someone linked to a Schlock Mercenary comic. Just because it's easy for you doesn't mean it can't be hard on your client.

Community and Commerce in Weblog Software (Jun 01 2004 19:42 GMT)

- The new licenses for Movable Type 3.0 sparked much outrage, as one can see in the comments to their announcement. The Many2Many weblog has a good roundup of the issues. Most users felt betrayed. They felt that had a relationship with Ben and Mena, the makers of Movable Type and the founders of Six Apart.

Empires of the Future

Of Patriots and Service (Jun 01 2004 19:42 GMT)

- Operation Take One for the Country Mission Statement: To discretely provide US troops shipping out overseas with the most sensually pleasing departure possible. This site surpised me, not because of the sentiment, but because of the blunt honesty and organization. I really should have expected something like this, when sites offer dating services based on political affiliation, and anyone can sell their own custom t-shirt. I wonder how future generations will look back at this?

Empires of the Future

Brutally Honest (Jun 01 2004 19:42 GMT)

- From the The Letters of Gary Benchley, Rock Star: If there is one word to describe bloggers, it is 'vulnerable.' Another word - well, phrase - might be 'incredibly self-aware.' Talking to them was like seeing Smiths songs come to life.

Best Text Message Fight Ever (Jun 01 2004 19:42 GMT)

- I confess that the point of text messaging escapes me. Perhaps this just shows my age, but I don't understand why you wouldn't just call someone, or leave a voicemail or email message. This one example I found in the Ars Technica bulletin boards took me a couple of minutes to figure out: 182 1822 udo? ys fku n/fku n/n/fku dmit

Owners' Manual to the United States: Part 1 (Jun 01 2004 19:42 GMT)

- The Google Owner's Manual reminded me of an idea I had months ago. While Wikipedia provides a wonderful service as a free encyclopedia, it doesn't answer the question, "What do I need to know as a citizen of the United States?" I would love to see a resource that would give context to today's issues. Ideally this resource would cite primary sources when asserting facts. Writing an owners' manual to the U.

Cut the Cable (Jun 01 2004 19:42 GMT)

- Yesterday I cancelled my cable tv service. No more TechTV, World Poker Tour, or even Sports Center. Even worse, I cancelled my TiVo. As I said before, I watched too much tv, and it interfered with everything else I wanted to do. Once I decided to watch less tv it made no sense to pay the $60 a month for digital cable.

Job Advice I Should Have Known (Jun 01 2004 19:42 GMT)

- As a consultant much of my work deals with telling people things that they already know. For some reason having an outsider repeat your own advice can make a difference. It happens to me too. When I interviewed candidates for job interviews, there were two things I liked to keep in mind: Someone once said to me, "The one question you have to answer is 'Do I want to work with this person?

Making Money In Social Software (Jun 01 2004 19:42 GMT)

- One of the first questions people ask when they hear about Friendster and Orkut is "How will they make money?" While someone has tried to measure the internet presence of social networking sites, it is too early to tell how social networking sites will develop. How would you even measure success? Here are a few ways social networking software could make money: Subscriptions - Probably not.
