A Kubrick Tuesday (Jun 02 2004 00:58 GMT) - Filmbrain experienced a few Kubrick-related coincidences today. First off, there was a post from the Cinetrix (with a super-cool title) that linked to two interesting articles -- one from the New York Times about the Kubrick exhibit at the Deutsches... |

Don't Drink the Water (Jun 02 2004 00:55 GMT) - If you are a kosher Jew, don't drink the water. Why? Tiny crustaceans called copepods make it un-kosher, as the eating of aquatic animals that have exoskeletons is forbidden. I sort of doubt that Jews worried much about this during Biblical times, so does this mean that today's Jews (who have the tech to be aware of copepods) are "better" Jews than their ancestors? How much more well-defined will religious laws get as our technology improves, and when you get right down to it, doesn't is just seem like a lot of hullabaloo about nothing? |

Crime Doesn't Pay Thinking about ... (Jun 02 2004 00:42 GMT) - Crime Doesn't Pay Thinking about that Flip Flop (and boy what a flop) Lipgloss pushed my mind, my nose, my eyes back in time, a thousand miles away, to a small town named Sumner. I don't know what Sumner is like these days. My memories reach nineteen years into the past when I lived with my boyfriend in the short months before I got pregnant. But back then it was the color of raspberries and the smell of fertilized sod farms and the hot hard steel texture of railroad, and the taste of that lipgloss, the fresh round watermelon that dotted the fields two miles from our rented shack. Our landlord owned a beat-up German shephard who loved nobody and nothing but eating water from a garden hose turned up high and me. |

Making too much of a dumb movie (Jun 02 2004 00:22 GMT) - I don't often point folks to the political mag The Weekly Standard (okay, except when there's a LOL funny or pointed column by Larry Miller), but I thought Jonathan Last's The Hijacking of "The Day After Tomorrow" is a knowledgeable look at how a film that isn't crafted to make any sharp political points is being tilted that way by others. Last, who wrote the column on movie trailers which I linked to last week, is a man who knows how to make points without bluntly stating such pat observations as "this sucks." To wit: IT'S AN IRRESISTIBLE high concept and Emmerich's direction is sure and steady. He's seen the canon. |
