The Last Ride (Jun 05 2004 23:36 GMT) - TV Reviews: The big fear about "product integration" has been that programmers will put the cart before the horse -- or in this case, the Pontiac GTO before the movie. Allegedly an "action-packed" drama, this sponsored presentation by Pontiac and General Motors is really little more than a two-hour infomercial designed to sell muscle cars. |

Ike: Countdown to D-Day (Jun 05 2004 23:36 GMT) - TV Reviews: It seems history will judge our biggest icons not by their actions alone, but by the quality of the TV movies about their lives. With that criterion in mind, Lionel Chetwynd's script paints Eisenhower as dynamic as they come. Add to that a straightforward performance by Tom Selleck and you have a worthy tribute come Memorial Day weekend. |

The One That Got Away (Jun 05 2004 23:36 GMT) - TV Reviews: "The One That Got Away" manages to combine every tedious, contrived stereotype from romance reality shows into one boring mishmash. Generically handsome but inarticulate bachelor? Check. Gaggle of interchangeable, fresh-faced girls? |

Something the Lord Made (Jun 05 2004 23:36 GMT) - TV Reviews: Buoyed by excellent lead performances, made-for-HBO trifle hardly screams out pay TV (think more Hallmark Hall of Fame), which is all the more to the pay channel's credit for recognizing the quiet power in this period piece. |

TV Revolution (Jun 05 2004 23:36 GMT) - TV Reviews: Bravo is on the right track with this ambitious documentary analyzing the relationship between television and the culture at large, but as for execution, hold the applause. Although interesting enough, the opening two hours of this five-part series really don't address the most fundamental chicken-and-egg question -- namely, the extent to which TV leads or follows society. |

The Lion in Winter (Jun 05 2004 23:36 GMT) - TV Reviews: James Goldman's Oscar-winning screenplay has lost little of its luster 36 years later, in an impressive remake that provides delectably meaty roles for Patrick Stewart and Glenn Close. Beautifully shot but carrying an extra 20 minutes or so of screen time from its prior incarnation, "The Lion in Winter" is a long sit but nevertheless a rewarding one. |

Frasier (Jun 05 2004 23:36 GMT) - TV Reviews: "Friends" didn't set the bar especially high for NBC's grand duo of sitcom sendoffs, so leave it to five-time Emmy winner "Frasier" to strike a more satisfying chord. Deftly mixing genuine warmth with screwball farce, the series rolls out the big emotional guns while providing a small reminder of what brought it such acclaim through its 11-year run. |

Lewis Black: Black on Broadway (Jun 05 2004 23:36 GMT) - TV Reviews: Revered in college dorms for combustible outbursts on "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart," Lewis Black hits the sort-of big time with his first HBO special, in which he savages a wide variety of targets without ever really delivering a comedic knockout punch. As angry comics go, Black blusters with the best of them, but his material can't quite sustain this format, resulting in an hour that's amusing but nothing to shout about. |

Helter Skelter (Jun 05 2004 23:36 GMT) - TV Reviews: Although Hitler, O.J. Simpson, Ronald Reagan and Charles Manson make for an unlikely quartet, TV historians will link them as subjects CBS exploited in an early 21st century push to jumpstart its Sunday movie franchise. While this is a less-than-propitious time for renewed examination of Manson's crimes, what emerges is arguably the best of the lot. |

NASCAR Drivers: 360 (Jun 05 2004 23:36 GMT) - TV Reviews: There's a joke among uninitiated about what NASCAR stands for: No Athletic Skill, Centered Around Rednecks. FX seeks to remedy this stereotype and give die-hard fans a behind-the-scenes look at the mammoth-ticket Nextel and merely big-ticket Busch racing circuits. Focus on family life may convince wives of NASCAR dads to stay tuned after the race. |

The Mentalist (Jun 05 2004 23:36 GMT) - TV Reviews: NBC steps into the way-back machine with Gerry McCambridge, whose believe-'em-or-don't antics are considerably less objectionable than the "talking to the dead" psychics who briefly invaded the airwaves. Most projects along these lines haven't fared especially well of late. |

The Dick Van Dyke Show Revisited (Jun 05 2004 23:36 GMT) - TV Reviews: Unexpected as it is for a fluffy bit of sweeps-timed nostalgia to actually provoke hunger for more, that's the case with this warm and breezy tribute, an almost casual cast reunion augmented by classic clips. Cleverly conceived by Carl Reiner, who is among those to reprise roles from the original series, what's billed as the "159th episode" provides a solid reminder as to why this deservedly remains one of TV's most-beloved comedies. |

Inside (Out): Trey and Dave Go to Africa (Jun 05 2004 23:36 GMT) - TV Reviews: In a music scene saturated with Britney, Justin and Beyonce, it's easy to overlook rockers who don't provide MTV with scandalous musicvideos or stage publicity stunts to increase sales. VH1 proves that music can still be meaningful in its latest installment of "Inside (Out)," which documents the trip to Africa taken by Trey Anastasio and Dave Matthews. |

Elaine Stritch at Liberty (Jun 05 2004 23:36 GMT) - TV Reviews: Reviews of the legiter "Elaine Stritch at Liberty" left no superlatives on the table -- the show was a tour de force combining comedy, drama, music and a singular life spent committed to the theater. HBO's docu widens the lens to expose even more of Stritch, yet doesn't limn anything not covered in the one-woman show. |

The Passing of a Hero (Jun 05 2004 23:36 GMT) - For a kid growing up at the height of the Cold War, when the world was a big scary place and nuclear annihilation was always minutes away, Ronald Reagan was a larger than life hero that feared nothing. He was invincible. And none of us would have been surprised had he walked on water. I wrote a letter to President Reagan was I was in second grade and I can still picture the envelope with the reply address of 'The White House' emblazoned in blue that arrived for me a few weeks later. Though probably one of a million, for... |

Impediments (Jun 05 2004 23:34 GMT) - If you had not noticed, my blog has been down for 24 hours or so. The new server that I am hosted on "went down," but is now back with a nice, new upgraded Cpanel. My SQL database then had vanished for another number of hours, perhaps half a day, but has now returned. All of this was somewhat unfortunate as I have had quite a bit to write about in the last couple of days, that I no longer feel as passionate about. Further, I was, Thursday, setting out to overhaul the entire site in my move to EE, but clearly that became impossible and now it is on to final projects in the world of work.... |
