An ex-Microsoft Insider Speaks (Jun 08 2004 23:21 GMT) - Seattle Weekly has an article by Jeff Reifman who says that "addiction to Windows revenue, mediocre products, and missed opportunities could doom the company." Jeff "began using Microsoft products 23 years ago, at age 11, and I worked for Microsoft from 1991 to 1999 as a technology manager." Over the past year, my frustration with Windows grew, as did my envy of Apple’s cool new products. Finally, last month I went out and bought an Apple Macintosh G5 and began using the new Mac operating system, OS X. It had been years since I’d used a Macintosh. |

Vietnam Wants Internet Cafes To Monitor Internet Usage (Jun 08 2004 23:21 GMT) - If there's one thing that's obviously available in bunches on the internet, it's "bad information." However the Vietnamese government has decided that "bad information" (which they seem to believe is anything they don't agree with, or anything that portrays them in a negative light - this post, for example, would probably qualify) is illegal and must be stopped online. They've now told local governments to start monitoring internet usage and have warned internet cafe owners they can be fined or jailed if any of their patrons uploads or downloads "bad information." To help track this sort of thing, they also want all internet cafe owners to "document what Web sites their clients visit and for how long." In other words, it's now prohibitively expensive to run an internet cafe in Vietnam. |

"We are troubled by reports that the FCC may address interference problems in a manner that results in an economic windfall to one company and that would violate the competitive bidding requirements of the Communications Act," wrote the members of Congress, all of whom are members of the House Commerce Committee. |

Open source and visible source. ... (Jun 08 2004 23:20 GMT) - Open source and visible source. Zope Corp.'s layered strategy of engagement with open source and visible-source communities is a compelling blend of the strengths of free and commercial software development. In two previous columns, Open source citizenship and Giving back to open source, I explored the tendency of enterprises to fork open source projects rather than join them. Pedhazur suggests that a commercial entity supporting both an open source base and a visible-source layered product can reduce the need to fork. |
