- As predicted by the weather guys, the heat wave has broken. It's 72 degress outside and the temperature is falling. I don't have an indoor thermometer, but I would wager it's still in the low 90s, 100 percent humidity. Not great sleeping weather. But relief is on the way. |

- The Canberra Times is reporting here on UC's decision to pump up HECS fees by 20% next year and the predicatable shrill cries against it. While the TV footage of the teeny tiny protest was all accompanied by Socialist Worker and Resistance banners it's interesting to note it's the UC Law students who are going to bear the brunt of this. On the one hand it's hard to feel much sympathy for students being asked to contribute to their own education which is not being undertaken for anyone's betterment but their own. On the other hand successful people in our society were already repaying their country, for the advantages that made them wealthy, long before HECS. A thing called income tax I think we've all heard of. |
