When Only A Handful Of Liberals Hated Socialism (Jun 11 2004 15:59 GMT) - It was fitting that capitalism killed the Soviet empire before it did Encounter magazine, which, until its demise in June 1991, had for 37 years been a political and cultural outlet for anti-communist liberals. In a final letter to readers, its editor, Melvin J. Lasky, quoted an Eastern European counterpart on the woes of publishing: "Capitalism is the worst system in the world to edit a cultural magazine—except for all the others... Harry Potter 3: the least of the movies (Jun 11 2004 15:59 GMT) - Yesterday, our family went out to the theatre (a rare event) to see the latest of the three Harry Potter movies. We've read all of the books, and the movie had DVS, so why not? On the posative side, the DVS was well done and worked nearly flawlessly accept for the constant volume changes needed to keep the headset at a good level in relation to the rest of the movie. The famous Players staff have all been well trained to cope with DVS, a major improvement over the years. The only serious problem, and it as an extremely serious one, that remains is that a drivers license is required to get a headset. |

Nokia Series 60 for the Visually Disabled (Jun 11 2004 15:57 GMT) - I've been meaning to post about this for the past couple of weeks. While I was on hiatus in May, I received a nice email from one of my readers named Aaron Howell telling me he missed my posts, but also pointing out a very interesting application that he uses called TALKS. Aaron described himself "a blind Nokia 6600 user using Talks which gives the phone a spoken interface." Very, very cool! I had never thought about an app like that before! |
