Akamai Clarifies Attack Info, Denies It Was As Bad As Everyone Said (Jun 16 2004 18:59 GMT) - Responding to yesterday's outages that took major websites like Google, Yahoo and Microsoft offline for part of the day, Akamai is now claiming that it was the result of a directed attack, designed to take those customers offline. They also took issue with reports that the attack did as much damage as people claimed, and apologized to customer impacted by the attack. Either way, it doesn't really answer the issue of how to deal with these attacks. If part of the pitch of Akamai is to get rid of a single point of failure, this looks particularly bad for them, and they haven't done much to ease those concerns so far. |

BEA Alchemy (Jun 16 2004 18:58 GMT) - BEA Alchemy is an IE (browser) plugin that is being developed as a way to deliver rich data to thin clients and also help them work in an 'Occasionally Connected' mode. Jon Udell in this article says: ?The caching scheme is the heart and soul of Alchemy. Current approaches to taking browsers offline typically queue messages that later update in a server-based data model. |

doc type help (Jun 16 2004 18:58 GMT) - e that will then work for all pages. I was validating the coding via one of those sites and it came back with messages that said color hex codes were not supported in XHTML. But when I just put in the color "name", it came back fine. I also have some code where I specified font size in numbers, "9", etc. which it didn't like. |

Shake, Rattle And Roll (Jun 16 2004 18:58 GMT) - Man, my frickin' bloodsugar has been out of hand lately. It's driving me mad. I have hypoglycemia, so I expect weirdness sometimes, but it's happening like every day now. At least I learned that I don't have to drink orange juice to get rid of the shakes. (Not that I mind OJ, just not all the time. |

Bloomsday (Jun 16 2004 18:58 GMT) - I'm seeing Bloomsday mentioned everywhere. Google is commemorating it, many of my favorite webloggers have brought it up, and I've seen mention in other places as well. I know it's all about the James Joyce novel Ulysses, which I have not read. I also know that the novel was published 82 years ago, and this is the first year I've ever seen Bloomsday discussed at all. Why? |

Yet another sickening hypocrisy (Jun 16 2004 18:58 GMT) - How can we stand before the world and tell countries that aspire to become nuclear powers to abandon their weapons programs when we're expanding ours? The idea of the nuclear haves telling the nuclear have nots to remain have nots has always chafed, but when we're moving away from drawing down our arsenal and actively pursuing the development of new kinds of nuclear weapons, we ought to just shut up or simply resort to threatening countries that are trying to go nuclear, because that's the only authority we have. As far as I'm concerned, the need for "bunker busting bombs" is completely a figment of the imagination of people who just love to pursue bigger and better weapons. And even if they were desperately needed, I would still think that the cost of expanding our nuclear arsenal wouldn't be worth it. |
