The One True b!X's PORTLAND COMMUNIQUE
|
Motivation Stall (Jun 16 2004 21:59 GMT) - So we're sitting on at least three different items today, two or more from this morning's City Council session, and a brief catch-up on tram-related activities, but there is something about launching into this stretch of too-warm (for us) weather that is bogging us down. Plus we're somewhat fixated on trying to push some people to have an all-day backyard margarita siesta this weekend. At any rate, some of what we need to get posted... |

DVLA Warning [Nick Heaps] (Jun 16 2004 21:57 GMT) - DVLA Warning I'm told that the DVLA at Swansea is considering sending out warning letters to drivers as follows : "In order to assist other motorists in identifying potentially dangerous drivers, it's recommended that anyone with a lower than average driving ability should display a warning flag The flag (comprising of a red cross on a white background) should be attached to the top of a vehicle door.. For drivers of exceptionally low ability, additional flags are required." |

Stop Animal Patents (Jun 16 2004 21:56 GMT) - Just like toasters, clocks, and other inanimate object inventions, animals are being patented in the United States. Private companies, universities, and individual "bioentrepreneurs," have been granted over 470 patents on animals such as monkeys, mice, dogs, cats, sheep, and chimpanzees. For example, a recent patent was approved for beagles who were severely sickened and whose lungs were purposefully infected with a mold in order to test new human drugs on them. |

I Want Him To Be Well (Jun 16 2004 21:55 GMT) - Bad news from the rock n' roll front: The Ramones' legendarily cranky-conservative guitarist Johnny is in an L.A. hospital, "fighting a losing battle with cancer," reports CNN. Everything I, and then Nick Gillespie and I, had to say in relation to singer Joey Ramone's legacy when he died back in 2001 bears repeating about his guitarist partner (and often sparring partner) Johnny. |

In Seattle (Jun 16 2004 21:55 GMT) - I'm in Seattle for a few days so there will likely be no posts. I'm on a closed network during the day and in the evenings the hotel's "high-speed Internet access" is anything but high-speed. Trying to do anything is like watching a teletype come across, slowly. Too bad too, I wanted to tell you about the weekend seeing the Violent Femmes and the new Harry Potter... |

La Femme Musketeer (Jun 16 2004 21:55 GMT) - Los Angeles: Draws liberally from its forebears and is a whole lot of fun -- at times quite good, and occasionally bad enough that it's still kinda good. Essentially positioned as "The Three Musketeers: The Next Generation," Hallmark has delivered a lavishly appointed exercise in swashbuckling and silliness that plays like a lighthearted romp. |
