Microsoft in China (Jun 17 2004 23:49 GMT) - Newsweek writes how China is changing Microsoft: Most Western companies still lose money in China owing to bureaucratic meddling, mistrust of foreigners, weak courts and other symptoms of the incomplete transition to capitalism. Even Microsoft, a famously efficient cash machine, admits it has struggled mightily in the country. The company sees its future in international sales and desperately needs to make it in the mother of all markets. To a large degree, Ballmer's legacy depends on it. |

thereality of thefacebook (Jun 17 2004 23:49 GMT) - As the blanket of snow covering the New England hills was facing its final days, no one could foresee an epidemic that would soon be unleashed upon the world. Spawned in the cellars of Harvard University, Thefacebook has been invading college campuses nationwide since its February launch. Cornell became one of the first petri dishes for this virus, along with other elite schools like Stanford, Columbia, and Yale. Thousands of Cornellians rushed to create Thefacebook accounts when the campus was added to its network in March. The Cornell section of the web site already has over 9,000 members, which is incredible given the fact that there are less than 14,000 undergraduates at the university. |

QnA: File System TreeView for WinForm app in C# (Jun 17 2004 23:49 GMT) - [Here's our first question - Jay] OK I have a question: I have a WinForms application that I've been working on for a while now, and am completely stuck on this one problem and can't seem to get beyond it. I'm trying to incorporate a TreeView control into the application with the contents of the file system (similar to the TreeView in Windows Explorer, or a file picker dialog) that will allow a user to readily select a file from the file system at any time. I've gotten it to work to a certain point, but can't seem to get past a significant problem that I've run into with it. Here's what I do: |

pentagon seeks ok to spy on americans (Jun 17 2004 23:48 GMT) - New bill would allow Pentagon to gather intelligence on US residents without their knowledge. From Christian Science Monitor Newsweek reports that the US Department of Defense is looking for the right to gather information from, and about, Americans, without having to tell them that they are doing so. "Without a public hearing or debate," the news magazine reports, "Defense officials recently slipped a provision into a bill before Congress that could vastly expand the Pentagon's ability to gather intelligence inside the United States, including recruiting citizens as informants." Currently all military intelligence organizations must comply with the Privacy Act. The act is a Watergate-era law that requires that any government official who is seeking information from a resident of the US disclose who they are and why they are seeking the information. |

Pitchformula (Jun 17 2004 23:45 GMT) - Pitchformula, by Loren Jan Wilson, is pretty awesome: This project combines a computer science background and a songwriting hobby with an unhealthy obsession for popular music reviews. In it, I attempt to come up with a new computer-assisted songwriting method which takes music critics' opinions into account. By writing software to statisically analyze the content of several thousand record reviews from the Pitchfork music website (www.pitchforkmedia. |
