Dems launch 'Generals for Kerry' campaign (Jun 18 2004 01:59 GMT) - Joining the wildly successful “Firefighters for Kerry” and “Police Officers for Kerry,” some 30 former general officers and diplomatic appointees have announced their opposition to Bush and support for Kerry. Calling themselves Diplomats and Military Commanders for Change (DMCC), the 26-person crew is putting out the notion that they are not so much for Kerry (“We’re not part of the Kerry campaign.”) as a bi-partisan endeavor to “change the leadership” in Washington. |

The Friday Five -- Lazy Bastard Edition (Jun 18 2004 01:58 GMT) - Because I am a bad person, I have not been scouring the permalinkosphere for nuggets of excellence with my usual steely-eyed vigor this week. Despair not, though, gentle readers, for I have nonetheless come up with a Single Link of such power and glory that it will make up for the notable lack of the Other Four, and quite possibly melt your snatch hairs. And so [drum roll please] I give you... the Friday One! Do not operate heavy machinery while using this blog. |

It's a man's, man's world ... (Jun 18 2004 01:57 GMT) - It's a man's, man's world If you're looking for evidence that men make gods in their own image, look to Senegal's southern region Casamance. The local religion, conveniently invented by men, says that the women's afterlife is dependent on their husbands being happy with them! Should a woman slightly wrong her husband, she will do everything possible to assuage her man's anger. In the Joola- and Manding-speaking groups, the woman will slaughter a goat and prepare a delicious meal to appease her husband. |

In a comment, John Beardsworth ... (Jun 18 2004 01:56 GMT) - In a comment, John Beardsworth says:It's interesting how some digital b&w photographers like to simulate different film. I've always used a mix of film with differing characters (mostly Agfa APX25, all Ilford stock, Tmax 3200) but almost always with lens filters and since going digital have never really felt I wanted to approximate their characteristics. So I only add grain (and then loads of it) when trying to get a pointillist effect or making the best of detail in a high ISO image. Oh, and for hiding blown highlights too. |

Vint Cerf Wants Standardized Email Authentication (Jun 18 2004 01:55 GMT) - If you hadn't received the message yet (perhaps because it was lost in all that spam), email sender authentication is coming. The only problem is that too many companies are implementing it in too many different ways. Now, even Vint Cerf, who apparently believes public floggings of spammers are the best possible solution (he was probably joking, but I'm sure many would support this sort of punishment), is saying that everyone needs to get together on a single email authentication standard. Of course, there still is some concern that switching to authenticated email will break certain internet applications. However, it's pretty clear that much of our basic email is now broken anyway. |
