Streak, first half ends (Jul 12 2004 03:59 GMT) - Ortiz flied out to left on this at bat at Fenway Sunday.I took in today's game at the Fens (and also snapped a few shots for the BSB) and enjoyed it thoroughly despite the 6-5 loss. Why? Because for the first time since the beginning of the year, the Red Sox had me convinced that they were going to come back and win a game. It was that same feeling you had last fall. |

Your cheatin' heart, deficient in vasopressin? (Jul 12 2004 03:59 GMT) - Study says gene encourages monogamy. A single gene, which controls the expression of a receptor for the neuropeptide vasopressin in the ventral pallidum region of the prairie vole, apparently makes all the difference between the monogamous mating behavior of this species and the promiscuousness of the closely related meadow vole species. Inserting the vasopressin receptor gene in the proper brain area in meadow voles makes them strongly prefer their current mate just as the prairie voles do, and blocking the effects of vasopressin at the newly expressed receptors makes them revert to their noncommittal behavior. The implicated region is involved in mediating the brain's reward system, and it is hypothesized that prairie voles feel a sort of reinforcing pleasure with their mates that is absent in the meadow vole. How do Firewalls Work? (Jul 12 2004 03:58 GMT) - A network Firewall is some dedicated hardware or software that tries to prevent unauthorized access of outside network traffic to individual computers (personal firewall) or to a group of computers. Some firewalls also block the outflow of data 'packets' from unauthorized programs in the protected computer. Firewalls typically adopt one or more of the following methods to secure traffic flowing in and out of a computer/group of computers, Network Address Translation (NAT) - works from within a network router to translate the service provider's assigned IP address to multiple addresses within the internal network. This hides the IP address of each individual computer in the network from scanners software in the internet. |

Design the firewall system. (Jul 12 2004 03:55 GMT) - Designing a Firewall requires that you understand and identify the boundaries between security domains in your network. A network security domain is a contiguous region of a network that operates under a single, uniform security policy. Wherever these domains intersect, there is a potential need for a policy conflict resolution mechanism at that boundary. This is where firewall technology can help. |

When Did Sequels Get So Good? (Jul 12 2004 03:52 GMT) - About ten years ago, I could go to Movie Part 2 confident about what I'd get. A slightly tired, watered-down version of the original. It wouldn't be quite as funny or violent or shocking, but it would entertain me for a couple of hours. These days, things have changed. This week I saw both Spiderman 2 and Harry Potter and the Hooded Pants Thief of Al Qaeda, or whatever it's called. |

Only a Firewall is Sufficient? (Jul 12 2004 03:52 GMT) - The Firewall is an integral part of any security program, but it is not a security program in and of itself. Security involves data integrity, service or application integrity, data confidentiality and authentication. Firewalls only address the issues of data integrity, confidentiality and authentication of data that is behind the firewall. Any data that transits outside the firewall is subject to factors out of the control of the firewall. |
