The rotten Apple Apple issued ... (Aug 01 2004 23:58 GMT) - The rotten Apple Apple issued a statement according to which it will bring legal slander against Real Networks for the latter's re-engineering of Apple's DRM format "fairplay" in order to make it compatible with Real's store and Apple's iPod. Apple says: "We are stunned that RealNetworks has adopted the tactics and ethics of a hacker to break into the iPod and we are investigating the implications of its actions under the DMCA and other laws". As an Apple user, and one who has been constantly defending their products and organisational mindset to friends considering a migration to another platform, telling them the story of Jobs and Wozniak hacking and selling those legendary black boxes, and how the Macintosh is a superior os, and that it is inextricably linked to the counter-culture of the 60s, indeed the outcome of intense creative forces coming together to hack the world in the image of the original hippie culture, I was "stunned" to hear that Apple is opposed to such "hacking" practices and uses the worst choice of words it could to express its discontent. Shame to Apple: |

Strange currencies. (Aug 01 2004 23:52 GMT) - One of the byproducts of working as a book editor (or any other role in the entertainment industry, really) is that at any time you may find yourself being a bit player in someone else's sudden celebrity. Aside from thinking my last name is "Hayden," this piece in today's New York Times Magazine gets my part of Susanna Clarke's story pretty much right. Clarke is indeed one hell of an original writer. I've just started getting into Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, thanks to Bloomsbury for providing an advance reading copy, and so far it's as good I would have expected. |

Black Caucus Plans Statewide Hearings Over Police Abuse (Aug 01 2004 23:48 GMT) - The California Legislative Black Caucus plans to hold statewide hearings on police abuse, a state senator and an assemblyman said at a town hall meeting in Leimert Park on Saturday. The community commission plans to present the LAPD with an independent report on police abuse and urge the department to make changes, such as psychologically reviewing officers involved in violent incidents against blacks |

Next up: Health coverage overhaul (Aug 01 2004 23:48 GMT) - With the budget passed, the governor now turns his attention to Medi-Cal. With the state budget behind him, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is planning a fundamental overhaul of the public health insurance program that covers one in five Californians. The administration is considering profound changes in who gets Medi-Cal coverage, whether some recipients have to pay for it, whether recipients use managed-care plans, what services they get, and how the state funnels Medi-Cal money to hospitals. In one possible scenario, some low-income people who now get health care for free could be charged a monthly premium or a co-payment of a few dollars every time they visit the doctor. |

A Challenge to the GOP on Values, Security (Aug 01 2004 23:48 GMT) - BOSTON, July 29 -- John F. Kerry staked his hopes for the White House Thursday night on a gamble that would have seemed almost unimaginable for a Democrat not so long ago, challenging President Bush to a debate on the twin pillars of Republican success: values and security. It is a challenge that has been building steadily along the campaign trail all year, as Kerry and his advisers confronted the political realities of the first presidential campaign since Sept. 11, 2001, and later the aggressive effort by the Bush team to define the Democrat as outside of the political mainstream. |

Kerry's speech was far better than I expected. |
