The Polisher (Fieldnotes by Hob) (Aug 02 2004 23:59 GMT) - It's not big but it is clever. An excellent counter point to the likes of the massive Swindon stone and al the other massive testimonies to stone age know how, this is an absolute gem. If you have your fill of Avebury, make the effort. It's such a superlative illustration of the amount of time and effort taken by humans to work stone. To be get a sense of just why this is such a significant bit of rock, try grinding two small bits of (non-archaeological) sarsen together. |

Lack of Leadership (Aug 02 2004 23:59 GMT) - Scott Rosenberg - The prez who cried wolf ...is there, as we're hearing, something truly, definitively different about this threat report -- something, beyond the specificity of the named targets, that distinguishes it from the previous, transparently manipulative Tom Ridge scares? The only reasonable answer anyone not sitting in or near the Oval Office can provide is, we don't know. And that's precisely the problem the Bush administration has created for the nation. [... |

Thanks, Loose Canon! (Aug 02 2004 23:58 GMT) - Conservative Catholic Charlotte Hays blogs for Beliefnet, and quotes me quoting Flannery O'Connor. (Cheers!)You'll find my response to the Pope's latest "crack down"(TM)here ["Help! These cold kitchen tiles are freezing my bare pregnant feet!"] as well as one of those infuriating comments-box "arguments" involving a half-dozen people who all actually agree with each other, but one is waaaaay too stupid to realize it and just makes herself (and her "cause") look dumber with each passing post. |

Amazon searches inside 120,000 books, 20 TB of data (Aug 02 2004 23:58 GMT) - In the latest issue the Fast Company magazine describes the database used for Amazon's Search Inside the Book feature. It includes 120,000-plus books. Each one had to be scanned digitally and indexed, a huge logistical challenge at a huge cost. The database took up 20 terabytes, which Bezos says is about 20 times larger than the biggest database that existed anywhere when Amazon was founded. But a large-scale launch was the only way to see whether it would go over with Amazon's 43... |

Going on the record (Aug 02 2004 23:58 GMT) - I am past due to put on the record my prediction about the outcome of the US Presidential election. I know, I know, I should have posted this before the polling started to come out showing that Kerry, rather than getting the traditional post-convention bounce in support, may have actually lost ground during his big showcase last week. Actually, though, my views on how this race will turn out have been pretty well set for... |
