P2P May Help Transparency In Politics Emerge (Aug 17 2004 23:59 GMT) - "The US Congress offers webcasts of their hearings but these often evaporate into the ether unless citizens take the initiative to make live recordings," says Click to Vote founder John Parres, who's spearheading the launch of the non-partisan P2PCongress.org. |

Chill, Toronto (Aug 17 2004 23:58 GMT) - Cool! Toronto's Deep Lake Water Cooling System was launched today. The system cuts electricity consumption in commercial buildings by 75 per cent by drawing near-freezing water through pipes extending five kilometres out into Lake Ontario. According to the city, the system will save enough power to service more than 100 Toronto office towers or 4,200 homes per year, and it will eliminate 40,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide. Here's a public television segment explaining the process. |

Independent computer scientists who have examined some of these machines' programming code are appalled at the security flaws. So there will be reasonable doubts about whether Florida's votes were properly counted, and no paper ballots to recount. The public will have to take the result on faith."From Saving the VoteBy PAUL KRUGMAN~~~~~~~~~ |

Inverted Utopias and Diane Arbus in Houston (Aug 17 2004 23:57 GMT) - Diane Arbus pretty much patented the concept of the beauty of ugliness in photography. She photographed sideshow freaks, nudists, and the developmentally disabled as well as more "ordinary" people who ended up looking no less freakish. I've seen a lot of her work over the years but never so much of it in one place. I knew she was popular and influential but I didn't realize how many of her images had become iconic -- what album cover ripped off her child with toy hand grenade? The show includes letters, notebooks and artifacts, too, which reveal her to have been a Kerouac-like correspondent, obsessive note-taker and sometime mail artist on the side. |

What you didn't see at the Olympic Opening Ceremonies (Aug 17 2004 23:57 GMT) - NBC in deference to the FCC was not allowed to broadcast a full shot of the kouros figures in the parade of Greek Culture, you see these figures were classically rendered as male nudes and true to their origins the men posing as kouros wore costumes that depicted the afore mentioned nudity. No reports of European TV doing the same edits. Look at how far we have come! |

From Barrons Online (subscription required) ... (Aug 17 2004 23:56 GMT) - From Barrons Online (subscription required) Google has chosen to go public in an unusual way, via an auction, and the process began on Friday. The bidding is geared to fetch something north, possibly well north, of $100 a share; if all goes according to plan, the company will be valued at around $30 billion and the whiz kids will each be worth $4 billion. All the hoopla surrounding the IPO, not a little of it eagerly generated by the financial press, has created something of a backlash, mostly by the financial press. |
