Exciting new advance in HIV treatment (Aug 18 2004 23:59 GMT) - Nature magazine is reporting (annoying registration required) that the use of statins (drugs used to lower cholesterol) dramatically lower amounts of the HIV virus in patients. Additionally cells with very little cholesterol appear to be much less susceptible to HIV infection so statins could be used in part preventitively (I was going to say prophylactically but then you might accuse me of egregious punning - oh darn there I've said it) A one-month course of statin treatment caused the virus levels of human patients to drop by up to 20-fold. Levels began to rise when patients stopped taking the drug. When mice, injected with HIV-infected human cells, were given the drugs, their virus levels fell, in some cases to undetectable levels. mellow : Une petite création (Aug 18 2004 23:58 GMT) - Cette après-midi orageuse m'avait rendue irritable, la pluie fouettant mon visage deux heures durant, les nuages gris et noirâtres se profilant à l'horizon, j'aspirais à de meilleurs jours plus ensoleillés. |
