comment (Aug 19 2004 23:59 GMT) - I knew somebody like that- he was called my boyfriend! In retrospect, it was probably not a good idea for a non-drinker to go out with a raging alcoholic. Funny how that works. Sometimes its better to have one good friend than a whole pack of stinky-pants Neddies. |

Oblivión (Aug 19 2004 23:57 GMT) - Continuing on (with what I hope to be some obscure musical groups) I would like to show the readers this album. If you like classical... purchase this cd. It is amazing and seems to capture a lot of emotion; I'm not quite sure how to describe it. |

Denon ARC-8000 AV Rack (Aug 19 2004 23:57 GMT) - When size matters, Denon's new AV rack with a deployable 80-inch screen should suit your fancy. Weighing in at 319 pounds, the "ARC-8000" is completely integrated - there is no need for hanging hardware. I'm not entirely sure how you get a 80" screen to go up in the air on its own, but I can assume some sort of steel bar needs to be put in place. It may cost 472,500 yen, but hey, that's nothing compared to the cost of the projector you need to buy to go with this. Read - Press Release [DenonJP] |

Raw Deal (Aug 19 2004 23:56 GMT) - This morning we linked to a New York Times story on the resignation of Deal Hudson, the Bush campaign adviser and point man on Catholic voters who is also publisher of the conservative Catholic journal Crisis. Hudson stepped down ahead of an investigative profile being penned about him in a Catholic publication. The piece by the National Catholic Reporter's Joe Feuerherd has now been published, and it's a doozy. Maybe now Hudson will stop lecturing people about morals and calling on U.S. |

Coke Via Cellphone (Aug 19 2004 23:55 GMT) - So to encourage Japanese people to actually spend 120 yen (about $1.09) on a single can of soda, Coca-Cola today announced the "Cmode 2" vending machine, which allows customers with cellular phones to purchase drinks "cashlessly" one of three ways - two-dimensional barcodes, infrared, and the FeliCa contactless IC system. Though cashless "Cmode" vending machines have been in various places throughout Japan since April of 2002, these are the first vending machines to support contactless IC as a method of transfer. With drink names like "Qoo," "SCORPION," and "Lovebody," who could resist? Read - Press Release [Coca-ColaJP] |

I am really honestly mad at google.com (Aug 19 2004 23:55 GMT) - Google is still awful at detecting hidden text. It is still missing some basic hidden text, and even if they finally crack that, there are still many ways of doing it with CSS that they will NEVER detect without listening to spam reports (which they rarely do), The important point is as described previously by BK - its about conversion rates. 'On page' factors are not as important as many people think, it is probably not the hidden text that helps a particular site get to the top anyway, more likely links and anchor text. Bottom line, if I searched for 'apricot widget' and I arrive on a page that doesn't really convince me that 'apricot widget' is what they sell, then all the hidden text in the world isn't going to help me make a sale. Having said that, it still irritates me that Google boasted that they were going to 'attack' hidden text when they clearly it was just more marketing spin. |

More precise info on RNC smartmobbing plans/claims (Aug 19 2004 23:55 GMT) - In a previous smartmobs post , the reference to "gunpowder" tactics being used to stop trains and subways is more likely a hoax. There are lots of reports of this on "conservative" oriented websites, but there is no actual evidence that anyone planned this so far. The report is that law enforcement officials have allegedly received messages that suggest activists: "Go to a rifle, pistol or skeet shooting range, spend an hour shooting to saturate clothing with the smell of gunpowder, go directly to a New Jersey Transit, LIRR or MTA subway train headed for Penn Station" In reality, it appears most of the activist smart mob activity is centered around trying to keep activists safe and organized. There is evidence that some "direct action"style groups are planning to target hotels and places that delegates are staying and to directly confront GOP delegates and "war profiteers". |

The Mobile Connection: New Book On Mobile Phone Use (Aug 19 2004 23:55 GMT) - I reviewed Rich Ling's new book about his extensive research (thousands of interviews) into the way people (especially adolescents) adopted and adapted mobile devices (both voice and SMS) from their first introduction in Scandinavia in the late 1990s. Ling is not utopian. He's skeptical about whether the Internet and the mobile phone will have anything near the degree of impact that the steam engine or printing press did. He wonders whether self-walled, mobile, gated communities will be the successors to today's intimate social networks of texters, and questions whether texting has any long-term future. Ling was doubly fortunate to connect with a worldwide community of social scientists who were observing the first eruptions of mobile social phenomena in their own countries. |
