A few days' roundup (Aug 21 2004 23:59 GMT) - I am not really distinguishing between weekdays and ends this summer, as I'm only working 4 hours on Tuesdays.Last night we saw David Byrne with the Tosca Strings at the Zoo. I went with a general like for the Talking Heads, a love of side group, the Tom Tom Club, and knowledge of one or two solo songs by DB. I left with awe and amazement. He is a brilliant and talented performer and musician. |

one-ish, two-ish, lots (Aug 21 2004 23:59 GMT) - Sapir/Whorf raises its head again in study of the Piraha tribe. I can't stop thinking about this article which appeared in the Globe and Mail Friday. A study appearing today in the journal Science reports that the hunter-gatherers seem to be the only group of humans known to have no concept of numbering and counting. Not only that, but adult Piraha apparently can't learn to count or understand the concept of numbers or numerals, even when they asked anthropologists to teach them and have been given basic math lessons for months at a time ... the Piraha are the only people known to have no distinct words for colours. |

Absentee Voting Could Play Key Role In Election (Aug 21 2004 23:41 GMT) - Excerpts from this NY Times on the role of Absentee Voting: Now, with the White House at stake, state party organizations are preparing similar drives to capture absentee votes in Florida, Ohio and many other states where polls show that voters are almost evenly divided between George W. Bush and John Kerry. They are using the Democrats' Arizona campaign as the blueprint and drawing lessons from its outcome. Up for grabs this year are not just the traditional absentee voters who mail in their votes because they are infirm, away at college or otherwise unable to get to the polls. |
