Now hold on (Aug 31 2004 02:59 GMT) - Why is it that the Right throws a temper tantrum every time a so-called Hollywood liberal makes a political statement, but it’s perfectly fine as long as an actor says something they agree with? Witness Ron Silver... |

Not exactly a Mondo track (Aug 31 2004 02:57 GMT) - Apparently, the Addis Ababa track is about as far as you can get from a Mondo track: ATHENS (Reuters) - Ethiopian distance great Haile Gebrselassie blames the atrocious state of his home track in Addis Ababa for the injury that spoiled his farewell at the Olympics. The two-time Olympic champion and winner of four world titles finished a wincing fifth in the 10,000 meters last Friday in his last track race before switching to the marathon. Amazingly, Gebrselassie had not trained for three weeks before the Games due an Achilles injury he aggravated six weeks ago on his home track, which is 14 years old and riddled with pot holes. "Our main problem is our track," said the 31-year-old on Thursday in his first news conference since the race. |

Bush urged to cut social security to pay for tax cuts (Aug 31 2004 02:55 GMT) - Greenspan-Aged Population to Hit Finances is the headline, but come on now. Didn't Greenspan have the same actuarial charts when he was urging the Bush tax cuts? But Greenspan, like his fellow paleocons, have all along thought Roosevelt a knave -- if not a Jew or a communist -- for implementing social security and the New Deal. So first cut taxes for the rich and now: "If we have promised more than our economy has the ability to deliver to... |

Thoughts on the RNC (Aug 31 2004 02:54 GMT) - Thoughts on the first night of the Republican Convention:As far as I can tell, the Republicans are nominating September 11th as president, and the Military as Vice President. It was just about all they talked about. As someone who saw the buildings fall in person, who felt the earth shake, and who smelled the sickening odor of burning metal, concrete, and God knows what else for months afterward, I'm offended at the Republican's pimping a national tragedy to get reelected. 3000 people died; |

Encouraging Cameraphone Use -- For Less Than Encouraging Reasons (Aug 31 2004 02:54 GMT) - The FeatureEncouraging Cameraphone Use -- For Less Than Encouraging Reasons... ... Instead of banning them, Chinese authorities have creatively adapted cameraphones as yet another tool to control its citizens, if the latest allegations prove to be true. Authorities there reportedly threatened pro-democracy radio talk show hosts, after which they all quit. This didn't involve cameraphones until new reports emerged that authorities have contacted the families of callers to these shows still living on the mainland. |
