Insider Behind Identity Theft Scam Pleads Guilty (Sep 14 2004 22:51 GMT) - It was one of the biggest identity theft cases ever, where an insider who had access to credit reports let others access the database in exchange for about $30 per report taken. That insider, Philip Cummings, has now pleaded guilty and faces up to 15 years in jail. In his defense, he claims he had no idea how much damage would be done with the information, which makes it sound like he thought these crooks were paying him a ton of cash just too look at random credit reports for the fun of it. It seems unlikely that he didn't realize what was really going on. |

The Staggering Legacy of Tax Cuts (Sep 14 2004 22:50 GMT) - If George Bush was running for re-election on the basis of his stewardship of the US economy alone, he would already be packing his bags. To be blunt, the economy's performance has been dismal by recent standards. Some of that grimness has not been Bush's fault — he took office in the backwash of a calamitous financial bubble, the effects of which made the economic impact of 9/11 look like a hiccup. But little that the Bush team has done since has been effective or sensible in policy terms. |

Software craftsman vs. Software Factories (Sep 14 2004 22:49 GMT) - UML is like a collection of tools, a craftsman's toolbox which provides the skilled craftsman the ability to work on different aspects of a task. The domain specific language approach seems to be working towards what some in the industry term "Software Factories". In this vision there are no craftsman, no master tradesman, journeyman, only task specific production line workers. The following blog entry by Alan Brown, who is responsible for future product strategy of IBM Rational's Design, discusses both software development models and shares whats best suited for overal quality of a SW solution. |
