Post-Debate/Pre-Debate (Oct 08 2004 23:59 GMT) - I watched the first debate. I gave you my review here. Reviews about President Bush's performance have steadily declined since the debate just over a week ago. This has hurt President Bush's standing in the polls. I am still convinced that President Bush will win, and win well. |

Playoff Experience (Oct 08 2004 23:59 GMT) - It's a good thing the Red Sox got Arroyo out of there for Mike Timlin with all that playoff experience. He'd never walk Erstad to drive in a run and then give up a grand slam to Vlad. What's that?... |

Scientists to Eavesdrop on Memory Formation (Oct 08 2004 23:57 GMT) - Researchers have identified a circuit in the brain that appears crucial in converting short-term memories into long-term memories. The circuit links the major learning-related area of the brain to another region that governs the brain's higher functions. The studies may open the way for eavesdropping on one of the central processes in learning and memory. According to the lead researcher, the finding sheds light on a central question in learning and memory research that concerns the roles of two brain structures, the hippocampus, which is involved in memory formation, and the neocortex, which is associated with higher brain functions. |

Pillaging Iraq in pursuit of a neocon utopia (Oct 08 2004 23:57 GMT) - It was only after I had been in Baghdad for a month that I found what I was looking for. I had traveled to Iraq a year after the war began, at the height of what should have been a construction boom, but after weeks of searching I had not seen a single piece of heavy machinery apart from tanks and humvees. Then I saw it: a construction crane. It was big and yellow and impressive, and when I caught a glimpse of it around a corner in a busy shopping district I thought that I was finally about to witness some of the reconstruction I had heard so much about. |

Welcome to the Duct Tape Diner (Oct 08 2004 23:57 GMT) - Welcome to the Duct Tape Diner More duct tape goodness. I filled two trashbags with foam peanuts, stuck them together and covered them entirely with duct tape. It feels just like the vinyl on a beanbag chair, and can easily be repaired if it gets a hole in it! I mean, that's ... |

What I’ve learned so far… (Oct 08 2004 23:55 GMT) - All of the worst distortions of the issue of domestic violence are still out there. Even the hoary old chestnuts like the Super Bowl hoax and the “rule of thumb” sham are still quoted as gospel by those who’ve never heard any different explanation. The 95% myth and the pure hokum of “a woman is battered every nine seconds” are also alive and well, sometimes even quoted by people like public officials who should know better. The issue of domestic violence has become the proverbial political football. I’ve been on the mailing list of AZCADV and one other of the major groups for some time now, and there has never been one word from either about improving services to more effectively serve their communities. |

This is going to be ... (Oct 08 2004 23:54 GMT) - This is going to be a long one. But trust me - it's a bloody good'un as well ... [a heartwarming tale via a slightly saddened Diamond Geezer] (I should probably point out that Geoff, with a mate, holds the World Record for visiting every London Tube station in the shortest time (18hrs 33mins 43secs). It may clarify a few things mentioned in his post). |

Michael Badnarik: Will Debate or Go To Jail (Oct 08 2004 23:54 GMT) - Michael Badnarik will be attempting to debate Kerry and Bush in Saint Louis this evening, or going to jail trying. I think we all know how that's gonna turn out, but to be honest, I'd love to see him take part. I'd even love to see Cobb take part, or anyone besides the two "biggies". It'd be good for democracy to turn debates back into debates, rather than the joint press conferences that they've become. Also, apparently Cobb will also be doing the "Debate or Get Arrested Trying" thing this evening. |
