- Linux and 3D fans will enjoy an article by Leigh Orf in this month's Linux Journal "Scientific Visualizations with POV Ray." Orf is a meteorologist who finds visualizing 3D weather data a challenge: a 4-hour storm simulation generates about 200 MB even using lossy file compression. POV-Ray (short for Persistence of Vision Ray Tracer) is an open source package that is mainly used to make photo-realistic renderings of scenes created in 3D modeling apps. POV-Ray was never intended for Orf's application, but, since it's open source, Orf was able to patch the code to deal with his monster data sets and other issues. |

- In Libraries ignore the value of stories--appearing in the Chronicle of Higher Education--a Wisconsin professor makes a strong case for balance when choosing content and setting other priorities: Statistics clearly demonstrate that many people rely on libraries for their stories, and generally, librarians know what gets checked out. Unfortunately, librarians have little knowledge of why people read what they do. As a result, they lack a deeper understanding of how libraries already serve readers, and they miss evidence that they could use to convince state legislatures and other sources of financial support that spending money on stories is important. They also are often unable to help patrons find just the right story to read, nor do they develop enough programs--book clubs, for example--to connect readers to one another. |

- It's not just High Bridge- there is something about the light in October that makes it hard to take good daylight pictures. It seems like every weekend, the sky is bright and cloudy, and everything looks washed out. I suppose I could buy some filters and play around- maybe shoot with an infrared set at noon. It's also probably a good time to go for closeups on objects and work on people shots indoors. Maybe I should forget about landscape stuff for the time being. |
