- America: The Book, the incredibly popular book by John stewart and the cast of The Daily Show, has been banned from Wal-Mart's shelves. Wal-Mart finds the naked Supreme Court photographs in the book too offensive for Wal-Mart shoppers. However, the photos are obvious fakes created with graphics software. |

- Alan Hollinghurst has won the Booker Prize with his gay novel, The Line of Beauty. The novel is about Nick Guest, a man who moves in with a wealthy and well-connected British family. This is the first time a gay novel has won the award. |

- The first HIV positive comic superhero has arrived. BBC reports that "Mia is a teenage runaway who discovers she contracted HIV during time spent as a homeless prostitute." Later Mia becomes a superhero sidekick named Speedy who first appears in a Green Arrow comic. |

- The 9/11 Commission Report (W.W. Norton) is a finalist for the National Book Award. The report was a surprise on the bestseller list and has sold over 1 million copies since its July release according to CNN. However, not everyone was happy with the report. |

- The Easy Way to Stop Smoking (Sterling Publishing) by Allen Carr has been revised and re-released. Over five million copies of The Easy Way to Stop Smoking have been sold worldwide. - Austrian novelist and playwright Elfriede Jelinek, author of The Piano Teacher and Lust has won the Nobel prize for literature reports the Boston Globe. The Globe says her most recent play called Bambiland (2003) is a "withering attack on the US invasion of Iraq." Jelinek is the tenth women to win the Nobel Prize for literature which includes a $1.3 million cash prize. |

- The BBC reports that adult are crazy over the Flanimals characters originally meant for a much younger audience. The Flanimals book by comic Ricky Gervais is about thirty five unusual creatures with names like flemping bunthimmler, hemle-sprot, munty flumple, mernimbler, wobboid mump, sprine bloat-trunker and munge fuddler. |

- Jenna Jameson, who is probably the world's most well known porn star, has hit the New York Times list with her memoir co-authored by Neil Strauss, How To Make Love Like a Porn Star: A Cautionary Tale. In the book Jameson discusses her move from stripper to adult model to porn star. Of course she also discusses her numerous sexual escapades both positive and negative ones. But all is not rosy in the "glamorous" porn world and Jameson told MSNBC she wouldn't wish her career path on a future daugher. |

- The Hugo Awards for best science fiction works in 2003 were recently announced at the 62nd World Science Fiction Convention, Noreascon 4, in Boston. The Hugo Awards are voted on by members of the World Science Fiction Convention. Lois McMaster Bujold won the Hugo for her novel Paladin of Souls. Michael Swanwick, Neil Gaiman and Vernor Vinge were some of this year's other Hugo winners. |

- Universal Studios has acquired the rights to the Zoey Dean novel The A-List (Little, Brown). The film, which will be scripted by screenwriters Pam Falk and Mike Ellis (The Wedding Planner) follows the cultural adjustment of a 17-year-old girl who leaves Manhattan her senior year and enters the lives of the rich and famous at Beverly Hills High. Alloy Entertainment will produce the film. The second two books in The A-List, Girls on Film and Blonde Ambition both hit The New York Times Bestseller lists within weeks of their publication. |

- Judy Blume will receive this year's 2004 Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters from the National Book Foundation. She is the first young adult literature author to receive the award. Judy Blume has written a large number of popular young adult novels that focus on issues young adults often face growing up including moving, divorce and sexual awakening. |

- Stephen King has finally completed his epic Dark Tower series. According to USA Today, King first started writing the first book in the series The Gunslinger about 34 years ago. The latest book in the series The Dark Tower VII: The Dark Tower was just recently released in hardcover. But just when you think King is done working on the series he has another trick up his sleeve. |

- Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks has announced a November 2004 start for the The War of the Worlds, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Cruise. An Amblin'Entertainment and C/W Productions film, The War of the Worlds, will be a 2005 release. Kathleen Kennedy and Paula Wagner serve as the film's producers and the screenplay is by David Koepp (Spiderman, Panic Room, Jurassic Park). |
