- Austrian novelist and playwright Elfriede Jelinek, author of The Piano Teacher and Lust has won the Nobel prize for literature reports the Boston Globe. The Globe says her most recent play called Bambiland (2003) is a "withering attack on the US invasion of Iraq." Jelinek is the tenth women to win the Nobel Prize for literature which includes a $1.3 million cash prize.

- The Hugo Awards for best science fiction works in 2003 were recently announced at the 62nd World Science Fiction Convention, Noreascon 4, in Boston. The Hugo Awards are voted on by members of the World Science Fiction Convention. Lois McMaster Bujold won the Hugo for her novel Paladin of Souls. Michael Swanwick, Neil Gaiman and Vernor Vinge were some of this year's other Hugo winners.

Dean's A-List Novel Goes to Big Screen (Oct 24 2004 23:32 GMT)

- Universal Studios has acquired the rights to the Zoey Dean novel The A-List (Little, Brown). The film, which will be scripted by screenwriters Pam Falk and Mike Ellis (The Wedding Planner) follows the cultural adjustment of a 17-year-old girl who leaves Manhattan her senior year and enters the lives of the rich and famous at Beverly Hills High. Alloy Entertainment will produce the film. The second two books in The A-List, Girls on Film and Blonde Ambition both hit The New York Times Bestseller lists within weeks of their publication.

- Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks has announced a November 2004 start for the The War of the Worlds, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Cruise. An Amblin'Entertainment and C/W Productions film, The War of the Worlds, will be a 2005 release. Kathleen Kennedy and Paula Wagner serve as the film's producers and the screenplay is by David Koepp (Spiderman, Panic Room, Jurassic Park).
