Arafat does have flu, confirm doctors from Tunisia and Egypt (Oct 24 2004 23:18 GMT) - Yasser Arafat, 75, has flu and is recuperating, said Ahmed Tibi, an Israeli MP who used to be Arafat's adisor. He said Tunisian doctors visited him yesterday and confirmed the Egyptian doctors' diagnosis of flu - an acute viral infection. Tibi is also a doctor. Israeli TV said Arafat had gall stones and an intestinal infection. It added that he would need to go abroad for surgery. |

Early detection 'best means' of tackling breast cancer (Oct 24 2004 23:18 GMT) - A new study claims many women are unaware of breast cancer symptoms and do not see their doctors after noticing changes. The findings come on the 10th annual Breast Cancer Day, which is aimed at raising awareness about the disease. Dr Helen Zorbas of the National Breast Cancer Centre says deaths from the disease are in decline, but early detection is important to ensure high survival rates. |

Patients fear closure of mental health program (Oct 24 2004 23:18 GMT) - Probable closure of a Napa County program serving about 60 patients with mental problems has many of those clients fearful they'll wind up at Napa State Hospital. Efforts are underway, however, to salvage enough of the Community House program to serve at least some of their needs, said Jim Featherstone, acting director of the Napa County Health and Human Services Department. Protein associated with aggressiveness in breast & ovarian cancer (Oct 24 2004 23:18 GMT) - A research team led by The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center has found a potential new protein marker for prognosis of breast and ovarian cancer. In the November, 2004 issue of the journal Nature Medicine, the researchers report tumor cells that "overexpress" the protein Rab25 are more aggressive and associated with poorer outcome. Thus, Rab25 could represent a novel therapeutic target or marker of tumor behavior, they say. |
