118th Assembly District: Interview with Darrel Aubertine (Oct 26 2004 02:59 GMT)

- Two years ago, Cape Vincent farmer and Jefferson County legislator Darrel Aubertine became the first Democrat to represent the North Country in Albany in almost 30 years. Now he's running for re-election in the 118th Assembly, or 'river', district against Republican challenger Scott Gray. Aubertine told David Sommerstein he learned in his first term how to play the game in Albany to advance North Country interests.

Heaven and Hell: A theological nightmare (Oct 26 2004 02:59 GMT)

- The idea that we live one short life on earth and then spend the rest of eternity in either a hell of torment or a heaven of bliss must rank as one of the most absurd superstitions ever invented by the human mind. No life on earth, no matter how good or how evil, could possibly justify an eternity of reward or punishment. What's more, if the Christian God created our souls, he must have given us our basic character traits, and would therefore be largely responsible for our actions, and if that is the case, there would be no justice in punishing us, or -- for that matter -- in rewarding us. And if this God really made us in his own image, wouldn't that reflect rather badly on God?

Intelligent recall-driven gesturing keyboard (Oct 26 2004 02:59 GMT)

- SHARK is an advanced, efficient, pen-based text input method for mobile devices that is easy to use. It combines novel pattern recognition technology with a stylus keyboard. A new user may trace letters on the keyboard to enter a word rather than typing each letter individually. The stylus keyboard in SHARK works as a "training wheel" towards sokgraph gesturing. It is also a mnemonic device that helps the user remember the sokgraphs.

Obama's Family Chose Life in Slow Lane (Oct 26 2004 02:59 GMT)

- Western Kenya and Illinois share a landscape of gentle hills and an economy built on family farms. But Kenya lacks Illinois' network of roads, railways and airports and has nothing like the city of Chicago. And that's just fine for Malik Obama, the older brother of Barack Obama, the Illinois Democrat running for U.S. Senate.

And we have a lot of it, especially when you compare it to the other aggregators out there. Sigh... So, I was flicking through the doco on plugins and channel hooks this afternoon and it struck me how cool these things really are. As far as we know, there are no other aggregators that offer these kind of features and they are real killer features since they mean that you can monitor anything at all, not just RSS or Atom feeds.

A Return to Writing (Oct 26 2004 02:48 GMT)

- The next three days are going to be horrid, weatherwise, so I can return to writing. In addition, I've had a response from the MediaWiki developers and a solution to the problem with the wiki may be in sight, soon. I have a couple of essays on Smart Mobs, one using photos (natch), and a couple on Collaboration that I hope to get through tomorrow, and then I'll be finally caught up. I did hesitate though on some of the writing. Though I can write with a velvet thread one moment--the words soft on the page, melancholy and bright--the next I'll dip a hawk's feather into a fine vintage acid, and etch my words into the aether.
