Another Look at the New Seattle Library (Oct 26 2004 19:59 GMT) - From the Guardian Observer UK arts columnist Deyan Sudjic critiques the new Seattle Library. He likes it alot . Sudjic says, "Inside is a series of genuinely beautiful spaces that despite (Dutch architect Rem)Koolhaas's reputation for cynical iconoclasm rely on surprisingly traditional devices. Tall, sunlit reading rooms are exhilarating because they make the simple act of finding a book and sitting at a desk feel good. Koolhaas allows you to look out of the window at the spectacular views of the city. |

So as you can see, you leave us feeling somewhat mixed emotions. |

Litigation (Oct 26 2004 19:54 GMT) - "Amazing Things Your Automobile Can't Do" makes the obvious point that manufacturers arn't bringing all their features to the US for fear of litigation (just like some US doctors are refusing to treat lawyers). The other hint I got from it was "Litigious US = percieved unsafe, high crime rate. Non-litigious Japan = perceived safe, low crime rate". Whilst there's more to it than that, there's something in it. Litigation abuses the law, which once done reduces one's respect for it. |
