Pneumonia Risks Rise With Heartburn Drugs (Oct 26 2004 23:23 GMT) - According to a population-based study, those who take proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as Nexium or Prevacid, and H2-receptor antagonists like the popular Pepcid and Zantac, may have an increased risk of developing pneumonia. In a comparison of some 365,000 Dutch citizens and about 5,500 first-time cases of pneumonia, scientists estimated the risk of pneumonia was 89 percent higher for current users of PPIs and 63 percent higher for current users of H2-receptor antagonists, compared with past users of these agents. But you don't need H2-receptor anatagonists or PPIs, if you do these things:Follow a solid eating plan based on your body's personal metabolic type.Drink up to one gallon of pure water every day combined with high doses of a good quality probiotic. |

Feds Backtrack On Flu Vaccine Scare (Oct 26 2004 23:23 GMT) - Last week, I wrote a story about the needless panic being generated by the Mass Media and the various federal agencies over flu vaccines you never really needed to take in the first place -- tainted or not. Now, as reality has sunk in that flu shots aren't going to be as readily available, we're starting to hear much more sane advice about the "absolute need" for the vaccine. What launched this mass panic attack, experts say, is a "scarcity mentality" similar to runs on banks during stock market crashes and convenience stores when hurricanes brew offshore. For example, in Seattle, people are paying $105 to ride a high-speed ferry for a shot at the dock in Victoria, B.C. |

Workshop on Semantic Web for Life Sciences Explores Scientific Data Networks (Oct 26 2004 23:23 GMT) - 2004-10-26: The W3C Workshop on Semantic Web for Life Sciences is being held in Cambridge, MA, USA on 27-28 October. Data networks allow biology to progress from the mapping of one-dimensional DNA to understanding multi-dimensional organisms and their diseases. Semantic Web technologies such as RDF and OWL enable the rapid creation of rich information networks and can assist in the generation of hypotheses across massive data sets. Workshop participants will address the publication, sharing and management of data networks, and will develop use cases and prototypes. |
