Tip of the iceberg (Oct 26 2004 23:51 GMT) - As I learned while embedded in Iraq, the highly lethal explosives stolen from Al Qaqaa are just a fraction of the mountain of poorly secured munitions that could be turned against U.S. soldiers and citizens. |

First Sinclair, now Pappas (Oct 26 2004 23:51 GMT) - Is it just us, or are Republican media moguls becoming increasingly brazen down the campaign homestretch, as they ignore decades worth of broadcast guidelines in order to use the public airwaves in blatantly partisan ways? First, the Sinclair Broadcast Group tried to order its 62 stations nationwide to air an anti-Kerry hit piece. Now in another unprecedented move, Pappas Telecasting, one of California's largest broadcast owners, is donating $325,000 worth of airtime exclusively to Republican candidates locked in tight local races. |

The battle for the Senate (Oct 26 2004 23:51 GMT) - Earlier this year many analysts agreed that the Democrats' only chance of winning control of the Senate was to win by such a large margin in the presidential election that it would filter down-ballot. While a big Kerry win may seem unlikely, Democrats still have a chance to take a majority in the upper house, thanks to some remarkably incompetent Republican opponents. |

Katherine Harris makes friends in Congress (Oct 26 2004 23:51 GMT) - Four years after making her star turn on the national scene during the Florida recount fiasco, Katherine Harris has been busy making friends in Washington, serving as a Republican Congresswoman from the state's 13th district. It seems Harris has brought a fresh and friendly approach to legislating. |

Righties tell the Cheneys Mary can be cured (Oct 26 2004 23:51 GMT) - We're sure that Republicans will be shocked and appalled to learn that Mary Cheney is once again being dragged forward to make a partisan political point about homosexuality. Today, Concerned Women for America, the veteran right-wing organization founded by Beverly LaHaye, released "About Mary: An Open Letter to Dick and Lynn Cheney." Under the guise of praising the Vice President's daughter -- "Mary is, I'm sure, a fine young woman with many wonderful qualities," it says -- the missive actually uses her to make an argument about whether or not homosexuality is a choice. |

Was Bush keeping quiet about Rehnquist? (Oct 26 2004 23:51 GMT) - How long has President Bush known that Chief Justice William Rehnquist was suffering from thyroid cancer? Monday's medical announcement from Rehnquist, a Bush ally, seemed to catch most of official Washington off-guard. But close readers of the New York Times Sunday magazine might have picked up clues eight days ago in Ron Suskind's cover story about Bush. Nearly 7,000 words into that 8,000-word story Suskind reported on a private luncheon Bush hosted in mid-September for his top donors, during which time he spoke freely, and confidently, about the campaign. At one point Bush promised loyalists that soon after his inauguration he would have the opportunity to appoint a justice to the Supreme Court; |

The enemy of Moby's enemy... (Oct 26 2004 23:51 GMT) - Moby and Eminem are not friends. In 2001, the gentle, vegetarian techno musician criticized the rapper for his lyrical violence, saying, "[I]t disturbs me that he glorifies homophobia and misogyny in his songs, especially seeing as his listeners are, for the most part, very impressionable 10-year-old boys." Eminem responded with this couplet in the hit "Without Me:" "And Moby? You can get stomped by Obie/ You thirty-six year old baldheaded fag, blow me. |

Why is Bush outsourcing his bulge? (Oct 26 2004 23:51 GMT) - Forget the firestorm over stolen Iraqi explosives. The Bush Bulge continues to be the real talk of Washington. Today the president tried to lay it to rest once and for all on ABC's "Good Morning America," by confessing, "I'm embarrassed to say it's a poorly tailored shirt." This was a new version of an earlier blame-the-tailor line of defense offered by the Bush-Cheney campaign, which pointed the finger at a suit coat malfunction. The problem with this explanation, of course, is that the presidential tailor in question turned out to be French -- a man with the classically Gallic moniker, Georges de Paris. |

Medical experts: Rehnquist's condition could be severe (Oct 26 2004 23:51 GMT) - The Supreme Court's brief public announcement on Monday that Chief Justice William Rehnquist has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer, underwent a tracheotomy, and is expected to return to the bench on November 1, likely masks the severity of his condition. |

Yes, Floridians, you can blame Bush for the weather (Oct 26 2004 23:51 GMT) - At least, the storms of the future, that is. That's the message of a new series of billboards going up along Interstate 4 in Florida, which depict a hurricane whirling towards the state with the slogan: "Global warming equals worse hurricanes. George Bush just doesn't get it." The billboards were co-sponsored by a PAC known as Scientists and Engineers for Change, which aims to expose the weird science of the Bush administration on issues such as global warming. |

To dream the impossible dream (Oct 26 2004 23:50 GMT) - Hmm... Non-election fluff... So, I watched both parts of The Lost Prince on PBS. Each night, they had approximately 90 minutes of the drama followed by a half-hour non-fiction on the historical facts described in the episode. As entertaining as the story was, I have to heap even more praise on those explanatory segments. |

Bush vs. Kerry vs Cooper (Oct 26 2004 23:49 GMT) - I posted this post about the abortion issue and linking it to economic issues. It makes a lot of sense to me. I have never believed that legislation will change society although in the issue of abortion, I do believe that life begins at conception and therefore life needs to be protected but I don't see any chance of seeing abortion over turned by legislation or the courts (Although many say that Bush could change that with more conservative judges appointed to Supreme Court if he beats John Kerry, probably the same people who said that he would do that if he defeated Al Gore and will probably write the same stuff when Jeb Bush/John McCain/Steve Forbes/J.C. Watts all run for the GOP nomination in 2008). |
