Airlines are Stupid (Oct 26 2004 23:44 GMT) - Since ATA filed for bankruptcy today [more], I figured this was a timely post. Yesterday, I booked an appointment with a client in Moline, Iowa. I did so yesterday because the airplane tickets were anywhere from $600 - $700 to a direct flight to and from Austin to Chicago, and I can drive to Moline easily. I booked the appointment yesterday and didn't think about booking the plane tickets until today when I confirmed the appointment (who buys refundable tickets today anyways). Well, this morning I logged onto AA. |

Prop. 72 (Oct 26 2004 23:44 GMT) - Wal-Mart says it will contribute $500,000 to the No on 72 campaign, after the pro-72 campaign made the retail giant a target of its message favoring a government mandate for employer-provided health insurance. This contribution strikes me as just enough... |

Magallanica... |

DIDW 2004: Identity for Us (Oct 26 2004 23:42 GMT) - I'm in the "Identity for Us" panel which is one of the few sessions that's not about identity in and between large organizations. The moderator is Doc Searls and the panel is Kim Cameron (Microsoft), Marc Canter (Broadband Mechanics), Simon Grice (Midentity), Dick Hardt (SXIP), and Someone (Identity Commons). The discussion is about grassroots digitial identity, social software, identity from the standpoint of the person (what Doc calls "Mydentity"). Its a shame really that there's not more of these here. This is where the really innovative stuff is happening. |

Firewalls, Anti-virus, oh my (Oct 26 2004 23:40 GMT) - I took back the open commenting system I put into place. That lasted almost 6 hours. Instead of my usual tirade against spammers (that can wait until later) I'll put the blame on who it belongs to, namely you. Another survey points out that 80 per cent of home PCs are infected. These infections are not only viruses that affect the computer they live on they also send out spam and/or host bots to crawl the web. |

I Voted Today (Oct 26 2004 23:39 GMT) - I voted today. I almost always vote absentee. Election day is a busy day in the life of a City Manager. Especially if there are elections involving city officials. The day is filled from beginning to end with unexpected questions and situations that must be addressed on that day, sometimes on that spot. |
