A few days away (Oct 28 2004 01:59 GMT) - More randomness tonight. I've been up to my eyebrows in the point-of-sale register installation and inventory at the gift shop, and I haven't felt much like writing anything when I've returned home each night. But tonight I've a few observations.... |

Windows v Linux Security (Oct 28 2004 01:58 GMT) - The Register explodes some of the myths in light of "Microsoft's determination to demonstrate that Linux is less secure than Windows": - Windows only gets attacked most because it's such a big target, and if Linux use (or indeed OS X use) grew then so would the number of attacks. - Open Source Software is inherently dangerous because its source code is widely available, whereas Windows 'blueprints' are carefully guarded by Microsoft. - Statistics 'prove' that Windows has fewer, less serious security issues than Linux, that Windows issues are always fixed, and that they are fixed faster. |

Reel Mant. Long (Oct 28 2004 01:56 GMT) - With winter coming I thought I would pass this post from Jamie Jackson (1/14/02) from my arcives to save everyone interested from having to search for it. Doc ==== (Jamie writes) In some recent posts, there were links to maintenance pages in Shimano's old Web site (which has changed and moved). While I don't think the new site has maintenance instructions, I had saved the old ones in text form. Here they are: Low Profile, Variable Brake System (VBS) Baitcasting Reel List of tools... |

Bush alienates own cousins (Oct 28 2004 01:56 GMT) - So now we've got a homophobic rapper for Kerry, conservatives for Kerry, Republicans for Kerry, libertarians for Kerry, evangelicals for Kerry...it only figures that the Bush Relatives for Kerry would come along as well. (Thanks, Mom!) |

Bushmen have trouble with technology (Oct 28 2004 01:56 GMT) - We've all typed ".org" when we meant ".com" before, or vice versa. But you'd think staffers for a campaign already accused of dirty tricks would be especially careful not to send their confidential e-mails to a certain parody site, which they could have known would publish them for all the world to see, including phone numbers, "passcodes", and suspicious lists of names in black neighborhoods. And would also forward all the mail to Greg Palast, who would report it to a wide audience. |

Helpline Comment (28741) (Oct 28 2004 01:55 GMT) - degroot. WinME, Win98, and Win95 will not install or run with 1 GB of RAM. Reduce it to anything less and the NOT ENOUGH MEMORY message will go away. I think this is a "rollover" problem with the addressing in Windows - it probably doesn't see the most signifigant bit and thinks there is zero RAM. |

Hangin' downtown (Oct 28 2004 01:53 GMT) - My last day in Los Angeles was spent downtown, where Dae and I visited the fairly new Walt Disney Concert Hall, one of the most beautiful bizarre buildings I've ever seen! Walt's widow Lillian donated 50 million bucks to the city to start the building, and other Disney family members upped the total to over 100 million, so it definitely deserves the name. The outside is full of sweeping metal surfaces, so huge that when they capture the sunlight you can feel the heat from several feet away! The inside is amazing, too - it's just confusing enough to invite exploring. Across the street we went to MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) and saw a couple of fantastic (and strange) exhibits, then had lunch at Philippe's, which is supposed to be the oldest restaurant in LA, as well as the original home of the French Dip sandwich (and it was yummy! |
