Speeches (Oct 28 2004 23:39 GMT) - I love speeches. Today, del.ico.us pointed me to a web site where they have a Top 100 Speeches list, complete with transcripts, and a fair number MP3's or streams of the speeches. This is so beautiful. |

Dreaming of a Single-Chip Mobile Phone (Oct 28 2004 23:37 GMT) - The Feature has an article by Mark Frauenfelder, which states that "two mobile phone components -- antennas and frequency oscillators -- have stubbornly refused the join the rest of the circuitry that has moved onto wireless transceiver chips. But research at the University of Michigan could lead the way to a single-chip solution." The next step, says Michael Flynn, who heads the wireless research group at UM, is to put both the slot antenna and the RF MEMS oscillator onto a single wireless transceiver chip. Besides making traditional mobile phones more useful, a single-chip transceiver could foster the development of smaller smart dust motes and tinier non-traditional mobile devices as well. Obviously, the idea of a phone small enough to fit inside your ear canal is repugnant to most people, but a single-chip transceiver will certainly lead to innovations no one has thought of yet. |

Enable / disable _exclude.xml files (Oct 28 2004 23:36 GMT) - I often create applications that consist of multiple loaded movies. In order to reduce the overall filesize of the .swfs in my project, I use so-called exclude files. To make life a little easier, I wrote two JSFL Commands that allow me to quickly enable and disable all exclude files for a project. |

Bush family ghostwriter - Wars seen as poll boost (Oct 28 2004 23:36 GMT) - Russ Baker interviews Bush ghostwriter Mickey Herskowitz:According to Herskowitz, George W. Bush's beliefs on Iraq were based in part on a notion dating back to the Reagan White House -- ascribed in part to now-vice president Dick Cheney, Chairman of the House Republican Policy Committee under Reagan. "Start a small war. Pick a country where there is justification you can jump on, go ahead and invade. |

Google's rapid rise rewarded the open-minded (Oct 28 2004 23:35 GMT) - SAN FRANCISCO -- As Google shares flirt with the $200 mark, investors have to wonder whether many of those buying the stock near that lofty level are money managers who once spurned it at half that price. Google shares have more than doubled since the Web search firm's Aug. 18 initial public offering, when a modified Dutch auction priced the shares at $85. Google closed up $7.33, or nearly 4 percent, at $193. |

Aaaiii! Ph'nglui Mglw'nafh Richard Cohen R'lyeh Wagn'nagl Fhtagn! Aaaiii!!! (Oct 28 2004 23:34 GMT) - Via Matthew Yglesias. Only a month ago, the Washington Post's Richard Cohen would sit in his drawing room in his dressing gown, warming his feet on the fine oriental rug while drinking Armagnac while seated in a high-backed leather chair, all the while sneering at those of us unfortunates who spent our nights psychotically ululating shrill screeds of Bush hatred at the dead, uncaring stars, having been driven into shrill unholy madness by the incompetence, mendacity, malevolence, and sheer disconnection from reality of George W. Bush and his administration: TAPPED: October 2004 Archives: |

Radio Interview Hints (Oct 28 2004 23:34 GMT) - Small Biz Advisor: "Doing radio interviews can be an effective way to publicize yourself and in the process, sell a few books. But even if no immediate sales result from an interview, the publicity, over time, will have a positive effect on sales. Some folks have no problems with interviews (in my case, my amateur radio hobby has made it easy to 'talk at a distance') but for others the experience can be somewhat daunting... especially at first. |
