F-14s On Last Pacific Deployment (Oct 29 2004 10:59 GMT) - I knew that the F-14 Tomcat was slowly being phased out in favor of the F/A-18 Hornet, but I didn't realize how far along the transition was until I came upon a report of the Tomcat's last operational Pacific deployment. I have to admit that this made me kind of sad. The F-14 is still one of my favorite planes, and learning about it was instrumental in starting me on my path to a career as an aerospace engineer. I only had the pleasure of working on a Tomcat once here at Pax River, but I'm glad I had the opportunity to see and work with one up close and personal. I can't remember the last time I saw one flying around the base, and it seems that Tomcats don't frequent the airshow circuit as much as they used to. |

Phoenix not Getting Support from Nearby Town (Oct 29 2004 10:59 GMT) - More reaction to the Phoenix city council's decision to mandate filtering for all library computers comes from the nearby city of Wickenberg (AZ) where the city council was asked to send a letter of support. The issue of sending a letter supporting the Phoenix City Council on its decision to censor material at its libraries died after 3-3 vote last week. What makes this story a little more interesting is what I assume is a poorly worded statement from Wickenberg Library board Vice President Helen Dudley (emphasis mine)It's our opinion that we have no problem in the Wickenburg library with persons using our computers to secure pornography.... Furthermore, it is our opinion that the Wickenburg library staff is very capable of monitoring the computer room. |

quot;I suspect I am a scholar because I am a bibliophile rather than the other way around.quot; (Oct 29 2004 10:59 GMT) - In this week's (yes, this week's) Chronicle of Higher Education, an assistant English professor talks about his bibliophilic obsessions. Why collect books? Is it because it's cheaper to have your own reading copy of a rare book than to travel to distant archives? Is it because of the sense of continuity you get from an old book that someone else has handled and made their own? Is it the way old paper looks and feels and smells? |

Do you know to look at a law enforcement officer's badge and I.D? (Oct 29 2004 10:59 GMT) - Today's LibraryLaw Blog has a piece by Sheila Bryant, library student and former correctional officer, in which she explains how to look at a law enforcement officer's badge and I.D. "My goal is to encourage communication, education, and cooperation for future interaction. I want to speak briefly about what I've seen when law enforcement officers interact with the mental health profession, and how this relates to the library profession." |

Students Value USC quot;Answer Manquot; (Oct 29 2004 10:59 GMT) - While we've all read myriad human interest stories about much-beloved school and public librarians, this is a terrific story about the difference an academic librarian can make in the lives of undergraduates. Ross Scimeca, the only librarian a the USC (CA) Hoose Library of Philosophy is as big or bigger a draw to students than the library itself, according to this portrait in the USC Daily Trojan. Those ideas and interests are what Scimeca loves to share with his students. Known as "the answer man," his mind is like a card catalog of knowledge. In fact, give him the name of almost any book at Hoose, and he can give you the call number off the top of his head. |

Wyoming Library Located on Old Burial Site (Oct 29 2004 10:59 GMT) - Here's a Halloween flavored story about a Wyoming library that's located atop an old burial ground. Since 1993, librarians at the Green River branch library have kept track of their and the patrons' encounters with the spirits that supposedly roam its rooms. Experiences range from feeling a presence close by but no one apparently in the same room, to hearing a voice speaking softly. |

Loox 720 Review (Oct 29 2004 10:54 GMT) - Tomer Eisner has reviewed the Fujitsu-Siemens Pocket Loox 720 over at handystore.co.il: "This little story goes a long way to explain how good and impressive this new product developed by Siemens in Germany and manufactured in the east really is. True, I did find some few imperfections that I would have liked fixed, but the bottom line is that this is a true winner, the kind that every PDA buff would like to own. |
