DMB Ponies Up $100k to Chicago Charities (Oct 29 2004 23:17 GMT) - Dave Matthews Band has issued a new letter to the people of Chicago, providing an update on the sewage-dumping situation. It's still not clear whether it was DMB's bus that dumped waste onto a tour boat, but the band has requested a passenger manifest to make things right with them, is seeking to compensate the tour operator, and has donated $100,000 total to a pair of Chicago River environmental groups. In the meantime, they have suspended the bus driver -- what with their not being on tour, though, that doesn't seem to mean much. Guilty or not, the band seems to be behaving as if they're at fault, since they have the resources to be of aid, rather than waiting to see if a court will order them to do so. Thanks to Jason for the tip. |

Band Back in Studio in October (Oct 29 2004 23:17 GMT) - The band went into the studio in the spring, but they managed only to record a few songs in that time, none in a particularly final state. Having road-tested those songs, the band will be going back into their Charlottesville studio after their October Vote for Change mini-tour, with the intent to wrap up -- or perhaps start -- the new album, the Des Moines Register reports. The album will be Dave Matthews Band's first since the July 2002 release of Busted Stuff. |

New Live CD Announced: Worcester (Oct 29 2004 23:17 GMT) - In a promotional e-mail, MusicToday (the merchandising arm of the band's business ventures) has announced the first CD in their new Phish-styled live concert series: the December 8, 1998 Worcester, Massachusetts show. Tim Reynolds performed with the band for the whole of the show, with Butch Taylor playing keyboard on many of the songs and Bela Fleck and Jeff Coffin contributing to a few songs, most notably a #41 that went past the 20-minute mark. This should come as no surprise to purchasers of the Gorge boxed set, who found mention of the impending release in promotional materials bundled with the discs. Making use of their new digital downloads service, the album will be available both physically and digitally, as MP3s and FLACs. |

DMB Up for a Woodie (Oct 29 2004 23:17 GMT) - MTVU, a network that nobody has ever heard of, has announced that Dave Matthews Band has been nominated for a "Woodie," an award that nobody has ever heard of, high-lariously named for the slang term for an erect penis. There are nine categories, and Dave Matthews Band is up for the "Welcome Back Woodie," which is "for the artists who've graduated into the wide world of mega-stardom, but who haven't forgotten where they came from." The winners will be established by popular vote, and announced during the first week of November on the MTVU network. Penis dick cock schlong. Thanks to Chris Sullivan for the tip. |

On Haines Fullerton (Oct 29 2004 23:17 GMT) - In September of 1996, after a slow slide downward, Charlottesville musician Haines Fullerton took his life. Fullerton's band The Deal had come a heartbeat away from making it big in the mid 80s, and met Dave Matthews in 1991 while tending bar at a popular Charlottesville bar. He became a strong, early supporter of Dave Matthews, predicting that Dave would be hugely famous one day, and even cowrote some songs with an early Dave Matthews Band. This week's issue of The Hook features a cover story -- "Dave, fame, and Haines: Celebrity, suicide, and the etiquette of envy" -- by Dave McNair, which is a recounting of a 2001 conversation that McNair had with Matthews about Fullerton. |

Best of What's Around...Eggs? (Oct 29 2004 23:17 GMT) - For the past year, it has been possible to buy locally-produced eggs in Charlottesville, under the "Best of What's Around" moniker. That name is no mere coincidence -- the goofy-looking, unusually-tasty eggs are the product of Dave Matthews' certified-organic farm in Albemarle County. Dave and his wife bought two square miles of land from the University of Virginia three years ago to prevent it from being subdivided, and their ever-growing selection of products are now available at the Maple Hill Farm Shop, half an hour south of Charlottesville. In addition to eggs, the sustainable farm is also producing tomatoes, herbs, peppers, pumpkins, potatoes, and a dozen other staples, with expansion underway to produce apples, turkeys, and goat cheese. Charlottesville weekly The Hook has the skinny. |

DMCB Calls it Quits (Oct 29 2004 23:17 GMT) - The most well-known Dave Matthews Band cover band, creatively named "Dave Matthews Cover Band," has broken up. Their farewell performance, planned as such, was held last week, at Atlanta's Variety Playhouse. The five-piece Athens-based band toured across the country for 4 years, serving up their own renditions of DMB's music to largely college-aged crowds. With the band's members having established their reputations as solid musicians while playing the music of others, they are now going their own ways to perform their own music . For some background on the group, see Brian Pace's January 2003 interview with them. |

Band Issues Dumping Letter (Oct 29 2004 23:17 GMT) - In response to the charges brought against Dave Matthews Band and bus driver Stefan Wohl in the Chicago sewage-dumping situation, Dave Matthews Band has issued a letter, addressed "to the people of Chicago and our fans." In the letter, they write that they "care deeply about what happened," describing the incident as "terrible" and "awful," both with regard to the boat passengers and the environmental impact, explaining that it's a matter of "simple principles of humanity." Praising Chicago, they promise that if they are found to be responsible, they "will work quickly to make amends." They also make clear that they are working with Chicago authorities to determine what happened. They also offer a spirited character-based defense of Stefan Wohl, explaining that as a member of the DMB family, his word that he did not dump the bus' sewage storage tanks means a great deal to them. |
