Hallmarks of a Great Developer (Oct 31 2004 04:33 GMT) - A truly great developer does not need to plan before coding, as they follow point 2 - they always know why. The best developments come not from planning, or from books, or as is the case these days, the plethora of code examples on the net, but from knowing what SHOULD BE WRITTEN, and just darn well writing it. To heck with standards, and compliance - where do you think a lot of the standards and code you use today came from? It came from people who JUST KNOW what should be done. Planning is of use only when the project is too large to cope with comfortably in a few steps in a developers head. |

Video Shows Kidnapped Afghan Workers (Oct 31 2004 04:32 GMT) - A video apparently showing three foreign election workers kidnapped in Afghanistan was shown Sunday on Arab television. The video was the firmest evidence yet that the three are in the hands of a Taliban splinter group which has threatened to kill them unless Britain troops leave Afghanistan and the United States frees Afghan prisoners. |

Prediction: It Won't Even Be Close (Oct 31 2004 04:30 GMT) - I've been trying to convince family and friends for months that no matter what anybody says, Minnesota is not a swing state. Our current Republican governor is more of a response to Jesse Ventura than any solid endorsement of the Republican Party. And as for our current Republican senator: if Wellstone were still alive, he'd also still be our senator. Minnesotans believe in balance. |

Prediction: It Won't Even Be Close (Oct 31 2004 04:30 GMT) - Do I think it'll be a Reagan/Mondale type rout? Doubt it. But it will be a landslide nonetheless, with highly-paid pundits scratching their heads for weeks, unable to understand that more often than not, statistics and "match-ups" and "conventional wisdom" don't mean a damn thing. |

First Tuesday (Oct 31 2004 04:30 GMT) - Hang on, I just had a sudden thought. If the US election is on Tuesday, we won't find out who won until much later in the week. After all, something far more important happens that day: 1. There's a bustle in the city, there's excitement in the scrub, there's a drone of ... |

Skype - 'Misc-Error' (Oct 31 2004 04:28 GMT) - I've been using Skype for a while now, with no problems at all. In fact it's totally exceeded my expectations. My father in law is back off to Iraq next week and I set it up on his (windows xp) laptop today so he can call home fairly easily and cheaply. I fired up my Skype to test his new account and found that I couldn't use Skypeout at... |

What to do in Seattle? (Oct 31 2004 04:26 GMT) - Friday morning I went to work, to be told that I'd be flying to Seattle the next day! So here I am, and Wi-Fi in hotels is a marvelous thing :) Anyhow, I will be attending a company orientation for Monday to Thursday, but tomorrow, next Friday and Satuday morning I have free. Since I had almost no time to plan this, does anyone have any great suggestions as to what a first time visitor ( of the geek variety ) could do here? |

Snack (Oct 31 2004 04:25 GMT) - I came home hungry from the Night of Dread, despite two tasty-but-small slices of pizza and a bowl of soup consumed over the course of the previous five hours. We did so much walking, following the parade back and forth around its route, that I shouldn't be too surprised. So I sat down to see what my cookbooks could offer me in terms of something easily made from what the cupboards had in store. Now I may not be a frequent baker, but I do so regularly enough that the cupboards are fairly well stocked with baking staples. Ingredients were no barrier to baking. |
