Librarian as a secret spy? (Oct 31 2004 21:59 GMT) - Godfrey Oswald writes "Dear librarians, I am in the process of putting the last few chapters to an extraordinary spy novel (The Kalahari Files) I hope to finish by xmas time. As a librarian, I am toying with the idea of making the official profession of one of the lead characters of "The Kalahari Files" to be a librarian, (most spies working in foreign countries has an official profession to mask their real profession as a spy). For instance Mata Hari was officially a famous dancer, but secretly a famous spy as well, and of course James Bond is offically a business man working for Universal Exports! I am now looking for any press stories of a librarian who was once exposed as a spy. Doe anyone know of any librarian who turned out to be an intelligence agent or vice versa? |

Redskins vs White House (Oct 31 2004 21:58 GMT) - From Snopes: "The Washington Redskins have proved to be a time-tested election predictor. In the previous 15 elections, if the Washington Redskins have lost their last home game prior to the election, the incumbent party has lost the White House. When they have won, the incumbent has stayed in power." This year's game is underway. |

Why I Love America (Oct 31 2004 21:57 GMT) - From Talking Points Memo, a story from the early voting in Florida that describes why I love America: The best of all was an 80 year old African American man who said to me: When I first started I wasnt even allowed to vote. Then, when I did, they was trying to intimidate me. But now I see all these folks here to make sure that my vote counts. |

Even Republicans Fear Hate Bush (Oct 31 2004 21:56 GMT) - Not often do I come across articles that fill me with as much indignation as one today did. First, it illustrated the sad state of the mainstream media in this nation as servants of the major parties' political campaigns. Second, it did so by pointing out the disgusting lack of attention paid to longtime traditional Republicans endorsing Senator John Kerry for President. The article is entitled "Even Republicans Fear Bush" and was written by John Nichols of The Nation. If the United States had major media that covered politics, as opposed to the political spin generated by the Bush White House and the official campaigns of both the Republican president and his Democratic challenger, one of the most fascinating, and significant, stories of the 2004 election season would be the abandonment of the Bush reelection effort by senior Republicans. |

Votes From the Dead May Still Be Counted (Oct 31 2004 21:54 GMT) - An untold number of ballots from people who have died since casting them will be counted this year because of the haphazard and cumbersome process of enforcing laws in many states to weed out these votes. With millions of voters taking advantage of new, in-person early voting in at least 30 states this year, it's even more likely that such "ghost" votes will be counted because, in most cases, those ballots are impossible to retrieve. Besides, it could be days or weeks after the election before local officials get word someone has died. |

Who Wants to Butt-Fuck My Brother? (Oct 31 2004 21:54 GMT) - It dawned on me that they shoot these shows in public settings while the public is kept out of frame in a manufactured world based loosely on our own. A glossed over ficticious reality, incredibly cheap to make that sells for an incredibly high price on network television. No stars to pay. No need for writers. No need for thought. |
