TouchGraph browser for Google Scholar (Nov 22 2004 19:57 GMT) - I've made a rough version of a TouchGraph browser for Google Scholar. Use this ->GraphScholar<- bookmarklet to launch it from any 'Cited By' page on Google Scholar - like this example page, or a direct link to the graph if you just want to see how it works. Double clicking on any of the nodes will load a new set of papers which cited the selected paper - in other words, opening up new nodes moves forward in time through citations. |

Is it still news if no one reads about it? (Nov 22 2004 19:54 GMT) - On Saturday, Kevin Ritchie described the situation of a South African newspaper having a complete sellout two days in a row. The Diamond Fields Advertiser had all ~8,000 copies of its print edition purchased by 7am last Tuesday, one day after drug charges were filed against five individuals. This created a huge amount of interest in the newspaper's "disappearance," leading to Wednesday's edition to be a sellout as well due to people wanting to know why there were no newspapers available to them the day before. While this article alludes to the possibility as to why the Tuesday edition was sold out, it was reported that "the vendors had been told that the buy-out was part of a competition to find out who could buy the most copies of the DFA, with the person buying the most set to win a scooter," according to the paper's editor, Johan du Plessis. Fortunately, an updated article appears today in the Pretoria Times, where it is apparent what was behind the scenes in this "sellout. |

Pupils 'texting' to stop bullies (Nov 22 2004 19:45 GMT) - A Nottingham school is piloting the country's first mobile phone text messaging scheme to deal with bullying, reports the BBC. Pupils at River Leen in Bulwell are able to send an anonymous text if they are being bullied. Posters are being displayed around the school giving details of the text message number. It is part of the first anti-bullying week in which the government is joining forces with children's charities to tackle the problem. |

Jerry Cornelius would (be) drive(n in) this (Nov 22 2004 19:40 GMT) - The international glamrock superstar fantasies are coming thick and fast for some reason - probably some weird return-of-the-repressed inversion having to do with how terribly serious and depressed I've been since Election Day. 1 mln CDMA subscribers by year-end 2004 (Nov 22 2004 19:39 GMT) - Having literally sprung-up as a new cellular technology overnight, the popularity of CDMA450 is growing, according to In-Stat/MDR. The high-tech market research firm reports that, as a result, the number of CDMA450 subscribers will increase from approximately 1 mln by the end of 2004 to over 2.5 mln by 2009. Because of the lower propagation loss at 450 MHz, only one CDMA450 base station provides the same coverage of approximately 25 WCDMA base stations operating at 2.1 GHz. |

Solar Powered iPod Backup (Nov 22 2004 19:36 GMT) - Looks like our wishful thinking has born fruit, at least sort of. The SOLIO, from UK-based Disruptive Technology Channels, serves as a battery backup for your iPod, holding sufficient juice to keep you fully charged. You can load it up by plugging it in to a wall outlet for four hours (UK style, naturally—adapters for us Yanks can be had online for less than $10) or, more importantly, you can let the sun do the work thanks to SOLIO's integrated solar panels. The solar option takes about twice as long, however. |

Do Computers Harm School Performance? (Nov 22 2004 19:28 GMT) - A study that showed that students who used computers more often did better has been re-interpreted to show that computer use may harm performance. Sound sketchy enough? Basically, it sounds like the stats were re-analyzed, taking into account the fact that more affluent students often had access to computers, and somehow tried to correct for that. When they normalized for that, they found that computer use could do harm to performance. Of course, that somehow seems to assume that more affluent students are somehow naturally smarter. |

Bulls 93, Lakers 102 (Nov 22 2004 19:26 GMT) - We learned two things last night, but nothing surprising. First, the Lakers are no more capable of maintaining a big lead against the league's winless team than they are against a division leader, proving that the problem lies with themselves. Second, Kobe's foot is hurting him. He's just not scoring well at all, to the point where he missed both jumpers and free throws too much last night. A win's a win, though. |
