Are you system intelligent? (Nov 30 2004 05:58 GMT) - Yesterday I attended a seminar on innovations and system intelligence. The program was an original mix of "soft" human-related topics in management, and the "hard" topic of technology development. Not bad at all. The "Learning Cafe" discussions at the tables were rewarding, although the format is a bit too constrained for my personal purposes. (The really tough questions need a mixture of different tools to solve. |

Impatience (Nov 30 2004 05:57 GMT) - As I recently mentioned, Snow Crash says: There’s only four things we [Americans] do better than anyone else — music, movies, microcode (software), high-speed pizza delivery. Paul Graham takes a stab at explaining why, Americans are good at some things and bad at others. |

Homegrown Terror (Nov 30 2004 05:57 GMT) - Terrorists come from all walks of life--including born and raised in America. Michael Reynolds reports, America's "most deeply entrenched and most persistent domestic terrorist threat has come from within its own borders and at the hands of its own citizens." Unfortunately, no one seems to be paying much attention. |

MAN OF TASTE (Nov 30 2004 05:57 GMT) - William A Mitchell never became a household name, but most households you can name have something of his in it Cool Whip, quick-set Jell-O, egg whites for cake mix… He gave American astronauts the first space-age beverage (Tang) and impressionable adolescents one of the great urban legends (Pop Rocks). Bill Mitchell's inventions are not to everyone's taste. Once, for a BBC show about Thanksgiving, I served Martha Stewart a pumpkin pie with Cool Whip, and she wasn't happy about it. As it happens, Martha and Bill Mitchell both have Nutley, New Jersey in common. In the year of Martha's birth, 1941, Bill Mitchell started work as a chemist at General Foods and briefly lived in Nutley. |

Arduin and the World of Khaas (Nov 30 2004 05:57 GMT) - The World of Khaas is the dangerous and mysterious realm of David Hargrave, the creator of the well known (some say infamous) Arduin Grimoires, all part of his own RPG universe. While David Hargrave has passed on, a few others have kept the path to Arduin clear and torches brightly lit in the darkness. I like using the Arduin RPG system and scenario packs, often just because the traps, spells, and artifacts are so weird, and the pre-packaged adventures are sure to be something that most D&D players have not encountered before. |

However, you must first pass a few simple tests for them to be satisfied that you are worthy and strong enough to help them.
