Spider Silk Genetically Engineered (Nov 30 2004 20:38 GMT) - An anonymous reader writes "Commercial silk comes not from spiders, but from the silk moth (spiders are hard to coral). But spider silk is stronger, so engineers, including in the Army, would like to use it for armor, tethers, and clothing. Scientists at Nexia Biotechnologies bioengineered some in 2002, but in a two-step process not ready for prime time. According to a LiveScience article, a separate team has now created self-spinning spider-web fiber. More work is still needed to produce anything useful, but the researchers say it might happen within a decade. |

Custom 404 Error Pages (Nov 30 2004 20:37 GMT) - I use the emailed 404's on several sites since a long time and for me it works great. I often have a lot of things to jumble around and what is easier then to shove that missing whatever.gif to the bottom of the pile? Well, when you get reminded about it all the time the only way to stop it is to fix the error or disable the emails. I fix the errors much faster this way. |

BBC Radio Streams (Nov 30 2004 20:35 GMT) - I think what gets me most about this auto-extracted list of realaudio streams regularly published by the Beeb is not just the shear scope, coverage and number of them, but the disheartening fact that such amazing cultural diversity has a snowball's chance in hell of happening over any airways of our own native bland as a Tim Horton's and twice as ubiquitous CBC. |
