Evil is winning (Dec 01 2004 23:39 GMT) - This is truly messed up. from Atrios This is pretty stunning. The networks won't run an ad by the UCC which says "like Jesus -- the United Church of Christ seeks to welcome all people, regardless of ability, age, race, economic circumstance or sexual orientation."And their justification?"the Executive Branch has recently proposed a Constitutional Amendment to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman, this spot is unacceptable for broadcast on the [CBS and UPN] networks"So, because Bush doesn't want federal or state recognition of marriage, a church can't even advertise that they welcome anyone in their doors? |

Confidences (Dec 01 2004 23:39 GMT) - I've just returned from a hike that was harder than anticipated, though incredible for all of that. Unfortunately, when I turned on my computer to upload photos, I received several emails, all related to an email I had sent out earlier to Marc Canter and three other people. An email where Canter completely discounted what I wrote in favor of someone who was 'higher profile' who had responded to it. An email that was forwarded on to several other people, and used to create a 'backchannel email list'. An email that was ended with: |

Boston Globe Put its Imprimatur in 2004 Behind Alumnus’s Ted Williams Book While Snubbing the Definitive Book on Popular, Fellow Boston HOF'er Mike "King" Kelly (Dec 01 2004 23:39 GMT) - In an example of turning history on its head, the books and sports departments of the once-honorable Boston Globe several times each touted a 2004 Ted Williams baseball book by one of its living, former writers, Leigh Montville, through serializing, reviewing and occasional plugging. At the same time, the Globe has entirely ignored an indisputably definitive 2004 book about another Boston Hall of Famer, Mike ''King'' Kelly, who late, legendary Globe columnist Harold Kaese called ''probably the most popular player in all of Boston baseball history.'' A plausible reason why the Globe, for the past decade, has probably shunned Kelly, who played in Boston mainly for the National League and Players’ League, is because he would drive a hole through its manipulation of the city’s long baseball history to filter everything through the Red Sox. Joints For Justice! (Dec 01 2004 23:39 GMT) - The High Court’s timing has taken an interesting twist now that Chief Justice Rehnquist is undergoing chemotherapy for thyroid cancer. Finally, someone with a real need for this therapy will actually have a vote on its future. Justice Rehnquist’s illness presents a once in a lifetime opportunity. If his own condition is helped by medical marijuana, he might influence others on the court to follow his lead and lift the federal ban. |

Designer Christmas Cards 2004 (Dec 01 2004 23:38 GMT) - Last years Christmas card proved quite popular with my friends and relatives, so I thought I’d make another one this year. I decided to keep it simple so went with a classic script font and snowflake design. To make it a little more contemporary however, I chose a pink and brown colour scheme, my current favourite. If you or your company have made a Christmas card, why not show it off here. |

Six Degrees World of Inventors (Dec 01 2004 23:38 GMT) - HBS Working Knowledge has an interview with HBS associate professor Lee Fleming whose work "looks specifically at how ideas and innovation flow across company boundaries through small (and getting smaller) communities and collaborations of inventors." Excerpts: In layman's terms, the best way to think about a small-world network is that there are local clusters, much like caves. Within these caves you have a small clan of people tightly connected together, with strong relationships between each other. But a couple of members in each cave—if you have a collection of caves within reach of each other—know other members of other caves, and it's this combination of a tight, local clustering with an occasional weak, distant tie to other clusters, that is the essence of a small world. |

Love One Another? Not on NBC, CBS (Dec 01 2004 23:37 GMT) - After people of color, a disabled man and a pair of men who might be gay are turned away, the image dissolves to a text statement that: "Jesus didn't turn people away. Neither do we." Then, as images of diverse couples and families appear on screen, an announcer explains that, "No matter who you are, or where you are on life's journey, you are welcome here." It is a graceful commercial, which delivers an important message gently yet effectively -- something that cannot be said of most television advertising these days. |
