Review of new documentary PHILOSOPHER'S PARADISE (Dec 02 2004 13:59 GMT) - InfoWhale writes "Philosopher's Paradise Reviewed by Steve Fesenmaier, Nov. 30, 2004 Pawel Kucynski, a Polish-American filmmaker, has created a very nice film about contemporary philosophy. Mixing personal documentary, as in Ross McElwee's works - "Sherman's March," now "Bright Leaves," and a sense of drama as in the Canadian feature, "The Barbarian Invasions," this super-home movie is about a father and son and the family, as are McElwee's films. There is a paradise in the film - a religious community with that name. But it also refers to the philosophy/religion his father, the founder of "universalism" wants to create. |

Privacy Advocates Concerned Over Proposed National Student Database (Dec 02 2004 13:59 GMT) - The Curmudgeony Librarian writes "The privacy rights of students again became an issue, as an announcement of a proposed new government database was made this week. The government database would contain enrollment records on all college and university students. Currently, schools only provide individual student information to the federal government in connection with federally financed student aid. Students not receiving federal aid do not have to be reported. Overall, other school information such as enrollment, graduation, and costs are reported without identifying particular students. |

Tarzan estate targets New Zealand author (Dec 02 2004 13:59 GMT) - VALIS writes "New Zealand novelist Nigel Cox is facing demands to stop publishing his novel Tarzan Presley. The novel is a humourous combination of the stories of Tarzan and Elvis Presley. The demands come from Edgar Rice Burroughs Incorporated, the estate of Tarzan's creator, who claim copyright infringement. Cox's publisher points out that the novel is a literary reinvention, not an attempt at passing off as a genuine work by Burroughs. It would therefore seem to be protected under copyright law. |
