When I woke up this morning, I saw a post on my friends list that got both Ian and I so angry, we're literally shaking. I've been writing up rebuttals to the post (and its comments) for the last hour-plus, and though I don't think I'm getting through to the poster, I hopefully can help some of the people in the comments. But I need a break. How about Hamlet's soliloquy: the PowerPoint presentation? |

Best-sellers: The art of screen advertising (Dec 02 2004 16:59 GMT) - Anonymous Patron writes "An archive of 100 years of film and TV advertising shows how much our tastes have changed, News @ The Independent. The slogans form part of the national vocabulary and the story-lines can capture the public imagination just as vividly as a soap opera or drama. From the lagers that refresh parts that others cannot reach to cigars that represent happiness, advertisements have been entertaining the British public - and helping them part with their cash - for more than 100 years. Re: RSS file being uploaded with updated material before publishing (Dec 02 2004 16:58 GMT) - Steve, Glad to hear that you've got a handle on identifying the problem, thats often the hardest part. Everything except maybe #6 sounds correct. It maybe correct but I'll have to double check, its just that its so rare that I remove a category, I'm usually adding one. Maybe its just a change in the category count, instead of only a reduction. Now I just have to figure out why my index. |

Stanford Cooperation Course Goals & Assignments (Dec 02 2004 16:58 GMT) - Goals of Hum 202: Toward a Literacy of Cooperation Might "cooperation studies" be the beginning of a new narrative about human social behavior? Rooted in the zeitgeist of Darwin's era, the scientific, social, economic, political stories of the 19th and 20th century overwhelmingly emphasized the role of competition as a driver of evolution, progress, commerce, society. The first outlines of a new narrative are becoming visible in biology, sociology, economics, computer science, mathematics, and political science – a story in which cooperative arrangements, interdependencies, and collective action play a more prominent role and the essential (but not all-powerful ) story of competition and survival of the fittest shrinks just a bit. The evolution of cooperation, the dynamics of social dilemmas, the economics of peer production, the design of institutions for collective action, the structure of social networks, the forecasting power of prediction markets, the power of distributed computing – can these frontiers in previously unconnected disciplines be mapped onto a broad interdisciplinary discourse? |

Arthritis flare update (Dec 02 2004 16:57 GMT) - Left knee: better -- less hot and swollen, less painRight hand: a little better -- still red and a little swollen, somewhat less painfulRight ankle: considerably worse -- the swelling makes it feel like there's a tourniquet around it, and it hurts quite a bit. The bad part is that my knee wasn't too painful if I didn't put weight on it, but this ankle hurts all the time. |
