Wired News: Fight for Public Domain Goes On (Dec 03 2004 20:59 GMT) - No One writes "Wired News: Fight for Public Domain Goes On; Digital archivists aren't giving up on their efforts to free out-of-print books, movies and music from overreaching copyright laws, despite a recent setback in court. The plaintiffs challenged the constitutionality of four copyright laws: the Copyright Renewal Act of 1992, the Sony Bono Copyright Term Extension Act, the Copyright Act of 1976 and the Berne Convention Implementation Act. |

Assistance Received! (Dec 03 2004 20:58 GMT) - Two days ago, I put out the call for assistance, because the comments area on this blog had become overrun with spam (giant messages with dozens of links). The messages weren't designed to attract clicks - they're not so stupid as that - but rather to fool Google into thinking that their sites had many other sites linking to them, which would make their rankings rise. So, unable to fix this, and unable to find the guy who programmed my comments in the first place, I put the call out. The result, as you'll see in the comments, is a SpamBlock challenge, where you have to type the word "human" after you've made your post, to prove your human. If they (the robots) figure this one out, the php script still blocks out all posts with links. |

What Can One Man Learn in Five Years? (Dec 03 2004 20:58 GMT) - I was going to stay away from posting today, and focus on writing. But I passed my daily word count already, so here's a treat. Eckhard Pfeiffer, who ran Compaq but was run out on a rail in 1999, is coming back to Chair a business search engine, Accoona. Now, let's remember, this is the same fellow who engineered the purchase of Alta Vista, then demanded it come public within six months. His lieutenant then drove Alta Vista into portaldom, and ultimately, into the arms of CMGI, which then imploded. |

Happy 8Barrel Day (Dec 03 2004 20:57 GMT) - Sometime in the next or last 24 hours, it is, was or will be international 8 Barrel Day. I can never never keep the order straight as between Jack Dova, 8 and that girl in elementary school who was impressed that I could spell antidisestablishmentarianism&n (but not floccinaucinihilipilification) Pay homage to the great and powerful 8 today or yesterday, but beware of big ass Mopars, curbs, dogs, crazed shoppers with runaway carts, frat groupies who post classified ads for dates, Miller beer, keg parties at your parents' house, Skoal and, of course, smart ass socks who will never ever let you live down any other damn thing you ever did or said. |

Wasting away again in Streetsboro (Dec 03 2004 20:56 GMT) - The word clusterfuck comes to mind. This being the first migration that's happened (occuring in tandem with another in Lexington) you expect some things to go wrong. You'd also expect that those who planned the migration might have done some testing to verify that the applications being used would actually work on the new PC's. This apparently did not happen. At least not to the extent that it should have. |

IBM = BASF? (Dec 03 2004 20:56 GMT) - Apparently I have some sort of fixation on old school commercials (see my entry here comparing Adam Bosworth to EF Hutton), but I can't help thinking that IBM is sounding a lot like BASF, whose tagline (I have the same reaction as that poster, incidentally) is "We don't make the things you buy, we make the things you buy better." They don't do applications (my colleague might beg to differ in some areas, but that's the claim, at least). They don't do consumer products (and I wholeheartedly agree with my colleague here, SAVE THE THINKPAD!). Yes, they have products that sit in front of people - Notes/Workplace, for example - but most of their work is done behind the scenes. |
