first they came for the... (Dec 05 2004 13:58 GMT) - AngryDesi (who is Hindu, not Muslim, just to make things clear), calls out a prominent liberal blogger: In the aftermath of 9/11, the government didn't remove everyone's civil rights - just the rights of those whom they thought might fit the category of guilty - namely Muslims and other assorted brown people. If Josh is okay with the government's actions, then Josh is justifying the loss of civil rights for a group of people. That makes him a statistic - one of the many Americans who believe its okay to give up civil liberties for national security as long as its not his civil liberties. As I have posted often, I am sick and tired of people who would scream about the loss of their own liberties but have no problem selling the rights of others down the river. |

Detect Parallel Universes In Your Own Home! (Dec 05 2004 13:54 GMT) - A parallel universe, it may surprise you to learn, is actually detectable in your own home, office, or almost anywhere indoors. All that’s required is a red laser pointer, a pin, and a piece of paper. This is a recast of the 19th Century Double-slit experiment, that revealed the interference of light and led to quantum physics. |

I Want My 3dTV! The Trouble With Holograms (Dec 05 2004 13:54 GMT) - Shooting holovideo [holographic video] isn't technically impossible, but it's likely decades away. The world's most advanced video camera probably belongs to NASA's space-flight holography program, SHIVA. While the camera can capture a laser-lit vial of liquid at 30 frames per second, the actual filmed area is only a centimeter wide, and the resulting video has maybe 1 percent of the granular detail we're used to. Maybe that's a huge breakthrough for zero-G lab tests, but filming actors will require millions of times more bandwidth and processing power. |

Law School Grading: Really, Really Weird (Dec 05 2004 13:52 GMT) - So, as Adam mentions, the LSSS has mentioned a proposal to change the grading curve. The proposal that everyone seems to favor is moving from A+ etc down to a system that is H/P/F: Honors/Pass/Fail. The motivation seems to be (first) that there's so little difference between an A- and a B+ exam, according to many professors and (second) that grades are so stressful. I'll deal with these both, and explain why I think that an H/P/F system is not the right solution. |
