Boy, That Was Tough - I Just Climbed Acatenango (Dec 06 2004 23:59 GMT) - It was windy as hell, cold as in a freezer, too little oxygen in the air and the visibility was at times less than ten meters. It was tough, boy was it tough! But the sense of achievement! And the... |

Yin & Yang (Dec 06 2004 23:58 GMT) - Some users get a bit of sick joy when it comes to bashing Microsoft on security, but like most spewing demagoguery they're generally leaving out the context, and no matter what the subject, context is important. Without context, it's very difficult to learn. I encountered a user like this the... |

Oregon, My Alma Mater (Dec 06 2004 23:57 GMT) - I always knew my old school was just a little cooler than the other places I considered for my not-so-brilliant college career. They just bought 250,000 scifi "zines" from a long-time collector. As it happens, a good deal of my time at UO was spent reading science fiction... probably one reason why my academic career wasn't so brilliant. Via BoingBoing |

The Pro-Am revolutionNo, not golf ... (Dec 06 2004 23:55 GMT) - The Pro-Am revolutionNo, not golf tournaments in which professionals team up with B-list celebs, but the title of an interesting Demos pamphlet by Charlie Leadbeater and Paul Miller about how amateurs are increasingly doing their hobbies to a professional standard -- and in the process doing a lot of good for society. I've always been irritated by people who use the term 'amateur' as a term of disparagement. In doing so they impute connotations of incompetence or frivolity. But the word 'amateur' actually means doing something for the love of it (Latin amo = I love) rather than for mere money. The open source movement is a terrific example of a powerful movement driven by 'amateurs' who produce code to a 'professional' standard. |

Rappin' with Dick Gephardt. Though ... (Dec 06 2004 23:55 GMT) - Rappin' with Dick Gephardt. Though he never was quite able to score the nod for veep, the veteran Democratic congressman from Missouri is probably still in the running for at least one title: the least hip politician in modern history. All the same, on the eve of his retirement from Capitol Hill, Gephardt is suddenly sounding a wee bit less wooden. He spoke with Matt Bai of the Times Magazine, where he praised Bill Clinton -- whose ability to "connect emotionally" makes him "the most talented politician" Gephardt ever saw -- and then dropped some 411 regarding eBay, iPod and Eminem. |
