Time to get cracking at the Vatican (Dec 07 2004 22:59 GMT) - Hugh Fitzgerald at Dhimmi Watch: "Do many in the Vatican think that the way to deal with Islam is through concessions and negotiations -- despite the fact that Islam is a belief-system whose adherents do not understand or respond in the slightest to any concession or yielding on the part of Islam's opponents, except to take such yielding as a sign of weakness, and to make use of any temporary 'truce' or hudna only to prepare for the next assault -- because there can be no permanent peace between Islam and Infidels?" |

Just goes to show you that Americans are the *REAL* prudes, eh? |

In that survey, we questioned SMBs about the sources of information they use to select IT vendors. Most favor word of mouth from colleagues when evaluating solution providers; few count on traditional media like TV and newspapers. Small businesses are now willing to tap more expensive sources of advice: |

Assessing Apps Vendor Viability (Dec 07 2004 22:57 GMT) - As the software industry continues to consolidate, more and more application vendors are under pressure to demonstrate market viability. Clients buying new software and reassessing their existing application portfolios should take care to understand the ongoing viability of their application vendors. This will help to avoid risks of loss of support and, in some cases, having to replace the application. Vendor viability assessments should be based on financial, product, technical, and customer dimensions. Tolerance for risk should be balanced against whether or not the application supports a mission-critical business need and if a close substitute can be quickly deployed. |

The Role Of Network Intrusion Prevention In Protecting Medical Devices (Dec 07 2004 22:57 GMT) - As healthcare organizations face increasing regulatory compliance and liability demands around information security and privacy, a unique challenge has sprung up in the security of medical devices. Medical devices have moved from the use of proprietary technologies to commercial operating systems — bringing reduced costs and improved accessibility at the cost of greater security exposure. Medical device manufacturers have to go through a rigorous process to validate the operations of these devices & |

The Dirty Little Secret About eStatement Adoption (Dec 07 2004 22:57 GMT) - eStatement adoption has more than tripled in the past year, with 26% of online households now receiving one or more eStatements from their financial providers. Sounds great, right? The only problem is that 97% of eStatement adopters continue to receive a paper statement. Firms must wean customers from their addiction to paper by offering a printable statement in PDF format, automatically turning off paper statements for eStatement adopters, and charging customers who request a paper statement via snail mail. |

Protecting Against Wireless Threats (Dec 07 2004 22:57 GMT) - All wireless intrusion prevention system (IPS) vendors claim that their solutions offer comprehensive intrusion prevention. The truth? Moving Federal EA To The Next Level (Dec 07 2004 22:57 GMT) - Over the past several years, major US federal agencies from agriculture to veterans' affairs have populated enterprise architecture (EA) repositories with current state data and plans for their future state. What's more, they've all used the formats provided by the Office of Management and Budget's (OMB) reference models, enabling easy cross-agency analysis. With this foundation in place, OMB will use agencies' architectures to map out a transformation to a set of common cross-agency solutions. The goal? A results-oriented federal government with redundancy squeezed out. |

Your Paths To Service-Oriented Architecture (Dec 07 2004 22:57 GMT) - The profusion of vendor hype and definitions for service-oriented architecture (SOA) floating around the industry can be confusing for architects planning their firm's SOA platform. Much of the confusion is the natural side effect of vendors vying for position and an industry struggling to come to terms with architectural change. Some of the diversity is quite valid: There are multiple paths to SOA, each with its own characteristics and architectural priorities. To alleviate confusion, we have identified six major paths to SOA; |
