The geeky best of lists (Dec 07 2004 23:26 GMT) - Earlier today I posted an off topic list of the best albums this year. Judging from the read count, lists are popular. I probably shouldn’t be surprised about this since: a) most people who read blogs are geeks; |

Dealing with dark reality in Iraq (Dec 07 2004 23:25 GMT) - With the exception of a few exuberant Washington war hawks, virtually nobody believed building a post-Saddam Iraq would be easy. But while President Bush sticks to sunny refrains such as "We're making progress" and "Freedom is on the march," evidence to the contrary keeps exploding in the administration's face. |

Preying on the troops (Dec 07 2004 23:25 GMT) - Here's a heartwarming story for the holidays: Military families, who clearly don't have enough to worry about, what with their loved ones being shipped off to fight in an increasingly bloody and chaotic war with no end in sight, and who already get a pittance for their troubles, also are prey for predatory lenders who have access to troops pretty much with the Pentagon's okay. From the Times: |

Review: The LC2100 LinuxCertified Laptop (Dec 07 2004 23:25 GMT) - "The LC2100 arrived with Fedora Core 2 pre-installed. LinuxCertified told us that Fedora Core 3 will get pre-installed on the laptop later in 2005 after further testing will take place in their labs. The laptop came with preconfigured SoftwareSuspend2 (suspend to disk, via LinuxCertified's own kernel version). It takes about 25-30 seconds to wake up the laptop after suspension. Unfortunately, instant sleep/awake does not work. |

Linux Clustering with Ruby Queue (Dec 07 2004 23:25 GMT) - "After the third cup of coffee, we had it: Why not simply create an NFS-mounted priority queue and let nodes pull jobs from it as fast as they could? No scheduler, no process migration, no central controller, no kernel mods--simply a collection of compute nodes working as fast as possible to complete a list of tasks. But there was one big question: was accessing an NFS-mounted queue concurrently from many nodes possible to do safely? |
