Newbie (Dec 08 2004 18:59 GMT) - Even though I've been shotting digital and using Photoshop for around 2.5 years, I never really took full advantage of the power of Photoshop. This is my first attempt at making a collage. I didn't put *too* much thought into it, I just grabbed some Flowers that I have shot over the years. I know it's not great, but I thought for my first try it was at least worth posting. |

South England (Dec 08 2004 18:59 GMT) - Some landscape shots from southern England that I took a month ago: a lake in Beaulieu village, the Calshot beach and some lime cliffs. I shot the last image from a little airplane (a Piper), flying over the coast - a really exciting trip. |

The Key To Neuron Death (Dec 08 2004 18:59 GMT) - The Korea Times reports that researchers have identified a key gene controlling the natural process of neuron death. This opens up opportunities for new ways to treat neurodegenerative conditions: "If we prevent neuron apoptosis by controlling Bax's activities using medicine, we can increase the number of neurons and help treat Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and muscular atrophy, which are all caused from abnormal apoptosis of neurons in the brain ... For curing fatal diseases, many scientists have focused on stem cells concerning the creation of cells. But we started the research noticing that preventing the death of cells may also help treat diseases. |

Required LISNews Reading: Daniel's DB Corner (Dec 08 2004 18:59 GMT) - Anonymous Patron writes "Daniel has been writing "mini-summaries" of databases available through Alaska's statewide Databases for Alaskans. Each week's column is sent out in the State Library's weekly newsletter Friday Bulletin, and posted to his LISNews Journal. His aim for this series is to give librarians, especially overworked librarians in small libraries, brief overviews of statewide resources and to provide sample searches. Good stuff, especially if you happen to be in Alaska, but useful even if you're not. DANIEL'S DATABASE CORNER: |

Customize Your IPod Screen (Dec 08 2004 18:58 GMT) - An iPod hacker called "The Wizard" has written an iPod firmware editor that allows custom images to be added to the device, like Johnnie Walker at right. The Wizard's editor can customize the images and fonts in the firmware contained in Apple's iPod updaters. Customize the graphics, and then load them onto the iPod when updating the software. Pretty simple. But beware: |

Building a Better Mousepad (Dec 08 2004 18:57 GMT) - One of our Gnomies, Mary Barnes (a software engineer), responded to an article on the mouse, and told us about something that oughta be on everybody's wish list: Several years ago at a World Science Fiction Convention, I attended a panel called "Inventions I Would Like to See." I said I wanted a keyboard with a flat, smooth surface, zero feedback and zero moving parts, activated by a light touch, like some elevator buttons. I wanted to type while talking on the phone, without the person hearing my keyboard. I was also tired of cleaning pizza crumbs out of my keyboard. |

Cheesed off with Google & Affliliate / Directory web sites [Alan Cooper] (Dec 08 2004 18:57 GMT) - I use Google a lot but I'm getting cheesed off with non relevant hits, in particular what I call directly listings. Tell me if there is a correct term for these. I'm referring to those sites that just list other sites on the same subject (though sometimes the content seems so non-relevant that I think they have been created with a bot). Hotels and consumer items seem to be the worse. It's the hotels that list every town and village in their web site that gets me. |
