Homework Horror Story quot;Students shun search for information offlinequot; (Dec 10 2004 19:59 GMT)

- Tina Emerick writes "CNN.com carried a story yesterday discussing students using only online resources for homework. Educators are concerned that students have the right information about what makes a good resource. From the article - Georgia Tech professor Amy Bruckman tried to force students to leave their computers by requiring at least one book for a September class project. She wasn't prepared for the response:

A Little More to the Left (Dec 10 2004 19:59 GMT)

- A month after the election, I’m still nursing a hangover from downing too much Kerry Kool-Aid. (My previous column taught me a valuable lesson: Never drink and divine.) And the Democratic Party seems similarly sluggish, mired in its quadrennial period of self-flagellation, sniping and backbiting about why they lost this time.

Stupid Smoking Lowers Your IQ (Dec 10 2004 19:58 GMT)

- Hate to repeat myself about the ills of smoking, and all the bad things it can do to you. But considering the results of this study, I just couldn't resist it. Scottish researchers discovered a link between those who smoked over a long period of time and its effect on their cognitive abilities. Scientists did followups on patients, who participated in the Scottish Mental Survey conducted in 1947 when they were 11 years old, between 2000-2002. No big surprise, smokers performed significantly worse in five different cognitive tests than did both former smokers and those who had never smoked.

Research Misses The Mark on Folic Acid (Dec 10 2004 19:58 GMT)

- I've posted numerous articles about the many benefits of folic acid, as it can lower your blood pressure, build stronger bones and help prevent birth defects. That's why I wanted to calm your fears about a new study in the British Medical Journal that allegedly found a possible increase in the risk of developing breast cancer among women who take folate supplements while pregnant. The concerns involved research involving nearly 3,000 pregnant women who were randomly assigned to take a high or low dose of folate, or an inactive placebo, from 1966-67. By 2002, a total of 210 women had died, and 31 specifically to breast cancer. Fourteen of those patients who died received were low or high doses of folate.

More Competition With Google For Your Desktop (Dec 10 2004 19:58 GMT)

- Not too long ago, Google, one of my favorite companies in the world, unveiled its Desktop Search Tool, free software that enables you to search for files and e-mails on your home or work computers with the same efficiency as the search engine superstar does on the Net. Looks like Google will have some competition for your desktop, starting next month, from Yahoo. The initial beta version of the desktop client will allow users search e-mail and files from their hard drives, and later on, its other services such as Yahoo Mail and Yahoo Messenger. Yahoo will license technology from a startup company in California for its desktop-search client, which will bring advanced query and preview features to the beta. But, unlike Google's desktop search, Yahoo's version will separate local results from Web results.

Childhood Cancers On The Rise (Dec 10 2004 19:58 GMT)

- You may recall a story I wrote earlier this year about the rising cancer rate among teens in the U.K. According to an examination of data from 19 European countries by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, cancer rates have increased about 1 percent a year for children, and 1.5 percent annually for adolescents between the 1970s and 1990s. In fact, the incidence of cancer by the 1990s had risen to 140 per million for children and 157 per million for adolescents.

Rumsfeld Nutrasweet Folleys Now Hurt US Troops (Dec 10 2004 19:58 GMT)

- Most of you have no idea that it was Donald Rumsfeld who served as the president of GD Searle in the 80s and was the pivotal reason that Nutrasweet was able to get approved. Attorney Jim Turner was able to nearly single handedly keep it off the market for 11 years until Searle hired Rumsfeld to skirt through the politics of the FDA and get it approved so they could earn billions of dollars. Now Rumsfeld is doing it again, result: Not so sweet misery for our troops!Soldiers confronted Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld yesterday with complaints that the Pentagon was sending them to war without enough armored equipment to protect them.

Top Ten Reasons Why Cell Phones Break (Dec 10 2004 19:58 GMT)

- I picked up my first cell phone over two years ago now. I primarily use it for Internet access while I am away from homes or sitting at the airport or on the tarmack. This week I flew back home from Vegas and had to wait in the plane on the tarmack for two hours due to low visibility at O'Hare. No problem for me, I just whipped out my cell phone and hooked it up to my notebook and was able to answer email and go on the net for the two hours while I was aboard the plane on the ground. The neat thing about it is the Sprint Vision service (the picture is my phone Samsung A 500) that I use is only $10 a month for unlimited Internet use.
