What's underneath a cartoon (Dec 11 2004 23:26 GMT) - A character study of 22 present and past cartoon characters. Animation was the format of choice for children's television in the 1960s, a decade in which children's programming became almost entirely animated. Growing up in that period, I tended to take for granted the distortions and strange bodies of these entities. I decided to take a select few of these popular characters and render their skeletal systems as I imagine they might resemble if one truly had eye sockets half the size of its head, or fingerless-hands, or feet comprising 60% of its body mass. Each character resides on a translucent, hinged panel. |

Klaus delivers in time for Christmas-Knoppix 3.7 (Dec 11 2004 23:26 GMT) - "These upgrades do seem to make KDE operate smoother, and Klaus has also added a quick link in the KNOPPIX menu for "Samba Network Neighborhood" which opens up Konqueror pointed to "smb:/" and lists any available Windows workgroups on your network. I have previously had to perform some extra steps to get lisa to browse my windows shares, but with 3.7 it found all of the local networks and browsed to them without a hitch. Knoppix 3. |

Personal networking suite in your pocket (Dec 11 2004 23:25 GMT) - Okay, this is pretty darned cool: Metropipe has a product called Virtual Privacy Machine, which is actually a tiny (82MB) Linux distribution which boots into a virtual machine under Windows. Wells, Halama Sign; Renteria Next? (Dec 11 2004 23:25 GMT) - David Wells has indeed signed with the Sox, but the deal won't be official until the portly left-hander passes a physical on Tuesday. In addition to a $3 million signing bonus, Wells will make $2.5 million in each of the next two seasons, with an additional $5 million possible each year in performance bonuses. The Sox also announced the signing of lefty John Halama to a 1-year, $1 million deal. The club most likely envisions Halama as a long reliever and spot starter--a role that Ramiro Mendoza was never healthy enough to play. |

Paying for computing -- then and now (Dec 11 2004 23:25 GMT) - Not so many years ago we would pay quite a bit more for a home computer. Example: In 1997 I bought a Pentium Pro 200 for something close to $3000. When you consider how technology was changing at the time, it seems like a lot of money. And it was. |
