Who cares about homeland security anyway? (Dec 12 2004 02:55 GMT) - Certainly not our government. Take a look at the latest piece in the New York Observer (via Hit and Run), on homeland security funding in New York. Not only does the funding across the country have little to do with the likelihood of attacks, but the funding within New York State doesn't focus on New York City! In fact, some expenditures have had nothing to do with homeland security: "Officials in Yates and Madison counties said they had strengthened defenses against illicit drug labs. |

I'll Take "Why I Left Your Bank" for $200, Alex? (Dec 12 2004 02:55 GMT) - Back in August, I switched all my accounts away from SuperMegaBankingCorp to my local credit union. I chuckled to myself when I noticed that they'd made the attempt to close my accounts without actually waiting (or accounting for) pending interest payments, and after they "closed" my account and sent me my check, they credited the savings account for, no lie, $0.01 in interest. So, the account had been carrying a penny in it for the last four months. Today I got a statement in the mail indicating that they had decided to charge me the standard MegaCorp monthly fee of $9. |
