Schools Turn to Comics as Trial Balloon (Dec 13 2004 17:59 GMT) - Anonymous Patron writes "The Washington Post is the latest place to discover the term "graphic novel"The reputation of comics has improved so much in recent decades that Maryland is planning a program that would use the books in public schools to help engage reluctant readers. Although some teachers have drawn upon comics as teaching tools, officials said the statewide project is the first of its kind in the nation." |

Law librarians say technology has them more in demand (Dec 13 2004 17:59 GMT) - The December 10 Memphis Business Journal has a long article about how the migration of law resources online has increased demand for law librarians and changed their jobs. "Becky Bowman, law librarian for Baker, Donelson, Caldwell Berkowitz, says she is busier now than five years ago because she must juggle buying books, researching print and electronic resources, and training all the attorneys and paralegals in the new forms of research." Weather Too Much for KPMG (Dec 13 2004 17:57 GMT) - Just heard on the grapevine that the roof of the KPMG building on Northbourne Ave has collapsed during the day due to the heavy downpours of rain. SES and Fireys attended, no details yet, and nothing online, but I'm sure there will be tonight. |

Vicki Dunne - The Entertainer (Dec 13 2004 17:57 GMT) - There I was wondering if there would be anything of interest in local politics over the next four years of majority Government. Riding into town upon a white horse is Vicki Dunne choosing a period of record rainfall and unprecedented flooding to call for total watering bans on some days. In this topsy turvy world it's nice to know I can rely on someone. |

Vale John Louttit (Dec 13 2004 17:57 GMT) - John Louttit, a stalwart of the community passed away after a long battle with illness over the weekend. While I can't say I agree with all the views he held, or all the causes he championed, his passion for the Canberra Community, and the time and effort he selflessly gave to good causes, cannot be questioned. His near-indomitable spirit was well shown as he defied his doctors expectations to make it to his final Rotary meeting. I'm told at one point the medical staff asked for his autograph, such was their awe at his continued survival. John's home page has long since departed but lingers on in the wayback machine here. |

Radford students run amok? (Dec 13 2004 17:57 GMT) - Last Saturday JB an I were wandering into Civic, and we had a brief yarn about this (from the Canberra Times, incidentally) unfortunate case of beer (and narcotic fueled so I am told) revellery at the small South Coast hamlet, Dalmeny. The article is explaining that some people have actually come to the party and started to make amends. But the galling feature of this is that the people who really are at the heart of this, have gotten away scot free. No, I am not talking about the locals who were caught up in all this, but the Students who did create sweet havoc, I mean vomit tends not to appear to fly screen doors by its own accord. High fives to those people who did approach the locals and make amends, but those of you who were truly responsible and have done nothing but hide behind the schools name (which has changed radically since the fine people who are behind RA and myself had the pleasure of attending this institution) and that of your parents and their gullibilty (of stupidity take your pick) you really need to have a good hard look at yourselves. |

Steamboy review (Dec 13 2004 17:57 GMT) - You may recall a RiotAct article about a movie called Steamboy at Electric Shadows - finishes on Wednesday. Well, I saw it on Saturday morning and it was quite good. Not for the masses, but if you're into animation, wierd inventions, and don't mind subtitles, you may enjoy this one. |

Canberra Review - Why be nice? (Dec 13 2004 17:57 GMT) - OK, I've been hoping for a while that the Canberra Review would turn into a usefull online resource. We've linked to interesting stories they've put up (doing wonders for their search engine ranking). We've taken on board reader comment that we've been too harsh. But Sweet Zombie Jesus, have you looked at their front page??? Editor Jorian Gardner described himself in a recent email as "Canberra's most innovative producer and artistic director of theatre, festivals and events" and I love his work with Bunch of Fives, and he gets the very cool Tom Woodward to do CD reviews. |

Belly Dancers take over - Casbah Festival. (Dec 13 2004 17:57 GMT) - There's a story in the Canberra Times about the Casbah Festival of Belly Dancing in Canberra over the weekend. Good clean fun, but are there really "belly-dancing schools in virtually every Australian town and suburb."? EVERY Suburb?? |

RiotACT Christmas Drinks - the washup (Dec 13 2004 17:57 GMT) - Many thanks to those who came along to our chrimbo drinkies at O'Neils. Aside from myself we had Ralph, SpecialG, Kitty, Jazz, MoneyPenny, Che, Kramer, GnT, Macca, Snoopy, and Roslyn Dundas stopped by with a friend later. The band (excellent, covers) alarmed us a bit by announcing the presence of the RiotACT christmas party. Someone must have been doing some googling and I'd love to know who it was. Also wouldn't mind knowing the name of the band. |
